To celebrate tonight’s full moon, the rising new rock outfit Crossbone Skully has unleashed the howling and eerie track “I Am The Wolf

When I wrote the lyrics to ‘I Am The Wolf,’ I found my spirit animal,” says Henriksen. “It’s a one-way trip to hell to kill the devil and destroy anything in my way…to find my rebirth and reclaim my worth! For I Am The Wolf!

I Am The Wolf” follows three consecutive track releases—“Evil World Machine,” “The Boom Went The Boom (feat. Phil Collen),” and “I’m Unbreakable”—which have combined amassed over 1.2 million streams to date. The aforementioned tracks will be featured on Crossbone Skully’sdebut album due out this fall via Better Noise Music.

The forthcoming album was executive produced by the legendary Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard) and includes features on the animated short film (“Evil World Machine”) from notable musicians, celebrity friends and bandmates of Henriksen’s for its recording sessions including Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Nikki Sixx, Joe Perry, and Kane Roberts. The album features first-class recording musicians including Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe), Jamie Muhoberac (My Chemical Romance, John Mayer, Seal), Chris Wyse (Hollywood Vampires, Ace Frehley, the Cult, Ozzy Osbourne), Tommy Denander, Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper, Hollywood Vampires), the late UFO bassist Pete Way, and producer/mixer Mike Plotnikoff (AC/DC, My Chemical Romance, Aerosmith). ABOUT CROSSBONE SKULLY

Crossbone Skully is an avenging superhero from outer space, returning to earth to save the world and reconnect with his lost deity love Piper and Kid, the son he never knew he had. Evil World Machine is a rock concept album that echoes similar dystopian visions such as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Diamond Dogs. The project, influenced by larger-than-life bands such as AC/DC, Alice Cooper, KISS, Iron Maiden and even the Sex Pistols, is the work of a collaborative team headed by veteran rock session bassist Tommy Henriksen and Tommy Denander alongside the legendary Mutt Lange, who emerged from retirement to executive produce the project.

With a long history that stretches back to stints in Warlock with Doro Pesch and his own punk-rock band POL (Parade of Losers) as Da Skunk, Henriksen has also had a successful side career as a producer/mixer/arranger and songwriter for the likes of Lady Gaga, Meat Loaf, Lou Reed, Halestorm, Kesha and Daughtry. His metamorphosis into Crossbone Skully and the Alien Nation started when Alice Cooper’s lighting man, who used to work for AC/DC, heard him singing like Bon Scott and successor Brian Johnson during a sound check – and suggested he build a solo project around it.

The sterling group of supporting musicians includes guitarist Tommy Denander (who introduced him to Mutt Lange after collaborating on Alice Cooper’s 2017 album Paranormal with Bob Ezrin), keyboardist Jamie Muhoberac (My Chemical Romance, John Mayer, Seal), bassist Chris Wyse (Hollywood Vampires, Ace Frehley, the Cult, Ozzy Osbourne) and drummer Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper, Hollywood Vampires), the late UFO bassist Pete Way and producer/mixer Mike Plotnikoff (AC/DC, Cher, Aerosmith), who helped get him noticed by Allen Kovac’s Better Noise Records. Making spoken-word appearances are Johnny Depp as the voice of “The Evil Sorcerer,” along with Alice Cooper as “The Bringer of Light,” Joe Perry as “The Big Bad Bone Crusher” and Nikki Sixx as “The Crooked Crow,” with Kane Roberts as “The Alpha Watchman” among other guests. Henriksen developed the voice of Crossbone Skully with a vocal app that makes him sound like a disembodied Stephen Hawkins. Iconic creative/art director Mark Wilkinson, who designed for Iron Maiden, Marillion, Judas Priest and The Darkness, created the Crossbone Skully album cover.

In Hearts Wake Announce Brand New Album ‘Incarnation’ Due Out July 12 & Share New Single/Video ‘Hollow Bone (pl ɹoʍ ǝɥʇ)’

IN HEARTS WAKE
ANNOUNCE BRAND NEW ALBUM
INCARNATION
DUE OUT JULY 12

SHARE NEW SINGLE/VIDEO
HOLLOW BONE (plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ)

TOURING NATIONALLY THIS SEPTEMBER

Today In Hearts Wake manifest a brand new chapter, announcing their sixth studio album, Incarnation, which will be released on July 12 via UNFD. This news follows the recent bittersweet announcement of long-time bassist and clean vocalist Kyle Erich‘s departure.

Speaking on the upcoming album, vocalist Jake Taylor shares:

“INCARNATION is the shadow counterpart and sequel to the band’s debut album DIVINATION, with each song inspired by the meaning and ideals of a particular Major Arcana Tarot card. There are 22 Major Arcana Tarot cards in every deck and 11 tracks on each record, bringing the vision to completion 12 years later.”

“But much like a coin with two sides, cards flipped upside down deliver the reversed meaning,” Taylor continues. “Polarised in every way, INCARNATION explores the dark underbelly to mirror and stand diametrically opposite to DIVINATION.”

In Hearts Wake have also dropped an official Incarnation Tarot-themed website that fans can visit throughout the album rollout for access to behind the scenes, sneak peaks at new music, exclusive info, and Incarnation announcements. For more info, visit https://incarnation.inheartswake.com/.

The hotly-anticipated follow up to 2020’s Kaliyuga, which debuted at #3 on the ARIA Album Charts, Incarnation is equally a powerful yet poignant step forward for the Byron Bay-hailing group, heralded today by the release of the fiery new single Hollow Bone (plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ).

Balancing spitfire guitars and searing textures, Hollow Bone (plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ) is a gripping ride that ricochets with polish and heaving dexterity, while also ultimately soldering the In Hearts Wake transformative spirit as vocalist Jake Taylor bellows “This cage is not my home.”

“Going through a death-of-sorts with Kyle having left the band, Hollow Bone became our reclamation anthem for the band to live on,” In Hearts Wake explain of their brand new single. “Since high school we’ve given everything and we weren’t about to give up. Not yet…”

“Picking up the microphone as a group, together we delivered a melodic chorus for the first time. We used actual bones as percussive instruments – symbolic of death’s transformation. This track acting as our stake in the ground. What would you die for?!”

Hailing from Byron Bay and now one of the leading acts in the Australian heavy scene, In Hearts Wake first roared into view via their 2012 debut album Divination; a tarot-inspired release, praised for its memorable breakdowns, melodic hooks, taut execution and a sea of features. Remaining a fan-favourite to this day, Divination also set the stage for a horde of headline shows, international tours, and appearances at Soundwave Festival, UNIFY Gathering, Groovin The Moo and beyond for In Hearts Wake.

Having previously released five hard-hitting albums, including 2014’s Earthwalker, 2015’s Skydancer, 2017’s Ark and 2020’s Kaliyuga, In Hearts Wake also routinely fuse themes of social and environmental justice into their palpitating brand of metalcore, with millions of streams and a dedicated fanbase across the globe flourishing alongside the band’s environmental endeavours, with the latter witnessed most recently via the 2022 feature-length documentary Green Is The New Black.

Boasting an ARIA Award-nominated soundtrack, Green Is The New Black focused on the making of Kaliyuga and In Hearts Wake‘s successful efforts to carbon offset the entire recording process. Critically-acclaimed, the film also explored the music industry’s relationship to the environment, generating an important conversation and viable solutions for the creative arts against the odds of the pandemic years.

Recently appearing at UNIFY Off The Record in 2023 and wowing audiences across Australia with their Decade Of Divination tour last year, In Hearts Wake now turn their gaze to a brand new album in 2024, and are also set to celebrate and farewell their journey to date with long-time bassist and vocalist Kyle Erich this September with a special Australian headline run that spans Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

In conjunction with announcing Erich‘s departure, In Hearts Wake also recently released a new single Farewell, with the track fittingly bringing to a close the monumental chapter for Erich and In Hearts Wake.

GIRL IN RED – DOING IT AGAIN ASIA/OCEANIA TOUR 2024

Secret Sounds presents…
GIRL IN RED
DOING IT AGAIN ASIA/OCEANIA TOUR JULY 2024
PERTH | SYDNEY | MELBOURNE | BRISBANE
Presale available from 10am local time Friday 26 April
Tickets on sale to the general public from 10am local time Monday 29 April

After selling out her run of headline dates last year, Secret Sounds is excited to announce Norwegian alt-pop artist and songwriter girl in red is heading back down under and is set to play some of her biggest Australian shows yet this July. With her latest album, I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! in tow, girl in red’s DOING IT AGAIN ASIA/OCEANIA TOUR will grace stages in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Since the release of girl in red’s chiming debut single “i wanna be your girlfriend” Marie Ulven has been at the forefront of alt-pop with biting songs about navigating the world as a young queer woman. Her honest lyrics and intimate production thrilled listeners around the world, making the Norway-born singer-songwriter one of the streaming era’s biggest grass-roots success stories.

Earlier this month, we saw the release of girl in red’s sophomore album I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!, which marks her debut with Columbia Records. The Oslo-based Ulven maintains her intimate songwriting while also broadening her sonic horizons. The new album highlights how Ulven’s songwriting has developed over the last five years, while the title track brings girl in red to an entirely new place.

The album comes after a long period where Ulven felt frustrated, despite commercial and critical acclaim, spots on Lollapalooza and Coachella, millions of streams for songs like the sweetly determined autumnal favourite “we fell in love in october” and a fiercely loyal fanbase. The new 10-song album chronicles Ulven’s last two and a half years with honesty and wit—and a healthy dose of what Ulven calls “ballsy shit” like the countrified, banjo-led breakdown on the swaggering title track. Ulven’s willingness to play around with her music and her image is, in her eyes, an evolution of the candour that has made her such a beloved musician.

Ulven’s successes so far have taken her a long way from the bedroom where she made her earliest records. She’s played popular festivals such as Oya and Glastonbury and toured with pop icons like Conan Gray, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift on the North American leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour. Along with multiple songs hitting nine-figure streams and winning prestigious awards such as BBC’s Sound of 2021 and the 2022 Telenor Culture Prize, girl in red has well and truly taken the world by storm.

With I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! Ulven is ready to harness the experiences she’s had and build girl in red into something “more ambitious, and more exciting, and more idea-driven,” as she puts it.

The past five years have been so insane, and that I’ve been given this opportunity is insane,” Ulven says. “But I think what’s really hitting me now is that I need to pursue music fully, and that’s something I want to do with this record. I just want to go all in on girl in red in 2024. I’m at a point where I’m willing to fly.”

Don’t miss girl in red spread her wings when she hits a city near you this July. Her 2023 Australian headline dates sold out well in advance, so jump on these tickets quick! Presale begins from 10am local time Friday 26 April and tickets to the general public are available from 10am local time Monday 29 April. As for Adelaide, sit tight for tour news coming your way soon. Sign up here to be the first in the know.

SHEPPARD ANNOUNCE THEIR FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM ‘ZORA’ COMING OUT ON JUNE 21

SHEPPARD ANNOUNCE THEIR FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM ‘ZORA’ COMING OUT ON JUNE 21, 2024

PLUS RUN OF USA HEADLINE AND FESTIVAL SHOWS

PRE-ORDER ALBUM HERE

ALBUM VISUAL ANNOUNCEMENT HERE

Australian pop superstars, Sheppard, today announce one of the most anticipated records of 2024. Zora, their fourth studio album, will be released worldwide on June 21st on the back of their move to Nashville, a run of headline shows in the US and the tenth anniversary of their global mega-hit Geronimo which has gone viral once again.

As one of Brisbane’s most successful bands of all time, Sheppard are enjoying a renaissance with recent singles lighting up charts on five continents while a new generation on social media discover the hits that have seen the sibling trio become certified 34 x Platinum and cross two billion streams worldwide.

Zora is the first studio album for the band since 2021’s Kaleidoscope Eyes (ARIA #2), 2018’s Watching the Sky (ARIA #1) and their debut LP in 2014, Bombs Away (ARIA #2). Preceded by the singles Good Time, Daylight, Dance on the Sun and Edge of the Earth, Zora contains 16 tracks that explore themes of resilience, hope, despair and strength, all underpinned by Sheppard’s trademark brand of anthemic pop designed to be turned up loud.

Band front man George Sheppard explains, “the album revolves around the rejuvenating nature of light and that no matter how dark life at times can feel, a new sunrise is just around the corner. Throughout any family ordeal or crisis (which no doubt every family goes through), we constantly look up to our Croatian Baba (grandma) whose name is Zora. Life has thrown her some monumental curveballs, but the way she’s always kept a smile on her face, shown nothing but love, positivity, and hope for the future in the face of tragedy is something we’ve always admired about her. This led to us consciously focus on gratitude and finding the positive in our own moments of crisis or loss. Instead of writing sad songs of self-pity and despair, we decided to set out to craft an album that was authentic to our emotion and real-life experiences, but could still be fun, uplifting, anthemic, and most importantly – hopeful.”

The stunning album artwork was brought to life by ARIA-nominated artist Giulia Giannini McGauran (Tones and I, Lime Cordiale) and graphic designer, Steve Lees, and was recently shot in icy waters off the coast of Melbourne.

Sheppard are currently back in Australia for the an iconic performance on the Great Barrier Reef as part of the Savannah on the Reefline-up this Saturday, before they return to the US for a string of shows in Texas, New York, Boston, Washington and Philadelphia. Following these five shows, they will head back to New York for a coveted slot at Summerstagein Central Park. European and Australian tour dates will be announced soon.

When asked how the name of the album came about, Amy Sheppard, herself an emerging successful solo country music artist who currently has the Number One ‘Independent Single on the US Country Radio Charts’ said, “in a way of honouring our Baba and paying some homage to our Croatian heritage, we decided to look up what “Dawn” was in Croatian. Incredibly, the word for “Dawn” in Croatian is “Zora”; our grandma’s name. It was a moment of serendipity that couldn’t be ignored. The album name had found us. Our hope is that Baba’s legacy of gratitude and love in defiance of anguish will live on in our music. That Zora will stand as a beacon of light for anybody who might feel like all is lost. A timely reminder that darkness is only temporary, and soon a new sunrise will arrive to paint the sky with colour once again.

Zora was largely written in Brisbane, LA and Stockholm by George and Amy Sheppard alongside long-time collaborator and founding Sheppard member, Jason Bovino. The new anticipated new album will be released on June 21st on compact disc, limited edition yellow double vinyl, limited edition yellow cassette, streaming and digital download. It is available for pre-order now from HERE!

Sheppard are George Sheppard (lead vocals, guitar), Amy Sheppard (lead vocals, keys) and Emma Sheppard (bass, backing vocals).

Cave In Announce Australian Headline Shows. Touring In June With The Ocean & LLNN

Destroy All Lines, Valhalla Touring & Strange Festival Presents

CAVE IN
ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN HEADLINE SHOWS

TOURING IN JUNE WITH THE OCEAN + LLNN

A pioneering and unique force of rock, metal and hardcore across multiple spectrums, CAVE IN will tour Australia and New Zealand for the very first time in their near 30-year history this June.

In addition to already announced dates supporting German post-metal titans The Ocean, the Massachusetts four-piece now announces a limited run of additional headline performances in Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington, and at the nascent Strange Festival in Perth. Though touring in support of their 2022 Relapse Records debut Heavy Pendulum, a critically acclaimed album described as everything from sludge metal to post-grunge, fans can expect a career-spanning set as CAVE IN finally touches down under.

Formed in 1995 in Massachusetts by singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky, CAVE IN was ahead of its time from the very beginning, helping to define the then-primitive metalcore genre with a more creatively elevated slant on their 1998 debut album Until Your Heart Stops.

Not content to remain pigeonholed, the band veered into more accessible psychedelic ‘space rock’ sounds on subsequent releases before a brief hiatus in the mid 2000s. After the tragic death of bassist/vocalist Caleb Schofield in 2018, Converge bassist Nate Newton picked up his friend’s instrument and the band was able to continue on its legacy, resulting most recently in their seventh album, 2022’s Heavy Pendulum; a culmination of all the sounds the band had explored throughout their tenure and then some, with universal critical praise labeling it everything from sludge metal to post-grunge and even thrash.

Don’t miss the long-awaited debut Australian tour for CAVE IN this June – this will certainly be one for the ages!

“Good Morning is a band that might have stayed one of Australia’s best-kept secrets – were it not for a series of unexpected co-signs… The album feels like something of a reset after a mammoth few years… where many songs wonder about the future and what it means to live and sustain a creative life. It might be an existential crisis – or it might just be ageing.”
The Guardian

“Liam Parsons and Stefan Blair’s music oozes personality; masters of tone, shepherds of sonics, and wizards of words, the cult two-piece have shown immense character and craft throughout their discography. Good Morning today announce, in celebration of their critically acclaimed album Good Morning Seven, an upcoming Australian tour set for June. Accompanying their RISING Festival appearance and just announced Pitchfork Music Festival London showcase, tickets are on-sale now. BUY TIX HERE + LISTEN TO LP HERE.

Good Morning Seven, the 17 track double LP epic from the duo of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons has continued to garner praise for the pair’s elevated production and forthright lyricism. The steam of acclaim locally includes playlisting across Double J and community radio placements on Triple R (Album of the Week), 2SER (Album of the Week), SYN (Local Feature Album), Edge Radio (Feature Album) amongst profiles across Rolling Stone, The Guardian, The Australian, Junkee, Bandcamp and abroad with the FADER, NPR, Stereogum, Paste, Northern Transmissions and more.

Upon release, The Guardian praised their “wry, charismatic, self-effacing paeans to the pain and pleasure of existence,” elsewhere Northern Transmissions remarked on Good Morning‘s enduring knack to “keep you hooked, from start to finish, with lots of variety and lots of humour and heart.” The Australian revelled, “The real magic lies in how these songs splinter and swoon in unexpected ways, prompting major feelings with minor touches.” Overwhelmingly, critical acclaim continues to laud Good Morning Seven as the vessel “that’s set to give them the wider notice they so deserve” (Rolling Stone).

Following on from their previously announced RISING Festival appearance, Good Morning are elated to perform across the east coast this June debuting their latest album to Australian audiences – that had hometown crowds at their Naarm / Melbourne SoundMerch pre-release in-store, lining up around the block attempting entry. Stefan and Liam will expand album favourites such as ‘Just In Time‘ and ‘Excalibur‘ into full band performances for the first time, as they currently support Waxahatchee across the US.

Good Morning Seven is an album of navigating choice, a testament to the investment (and pay-off) in taking time. Narratively the album considers the very real fear of it being wasted, against the means we seek to enrich it where Liam and Stefan celebrate the weird, the insular and the shitty through a stream of lessons learnt no matter how big or small. Alongside their enduring canine talisman – their metaphor for the human condition – alongside their stories on how we impact the hourglass passing.

ABOUT GOOD MORNING

Over the past decade, Good Morning have carved out a peculiar, hard-to-define indie career for themselves, amassing a global cult fanbase and hundreds of millions of streams despite (or perhaps because of) their defiantly DIY approach. The band/duo/recording-thing from Naarm / Melbourne, Australia come together as Stefan Blair (29, brown hair, 6 foot something) plays most of the instruments and sings half the songs. Liam Parsons (30, brown hair, 6 foot on the dot) plays the rest of the instruments and sings the other half of the songs.

The band name is intentionally impossible to Google but hasn’t gotten in the way of them getting shouted out by Tyler, The Creator, sampled by A$AP Rocky, going viral on TikTok (for their 2015 track ‘Warned You’), or touring the globe (including the US, Mexico, China, Japan, Thailand, and beyond). Their 2021 album Barnyard, both thoughtful and catchy, released internationally via Polyvinyl was met with widespread acclaim from Rolling Stone, NME, Stereogum, The Line Of Best Fit, Consequence, Alt Press, Paste, DIY Magazine, Northern Transmissions, KCRW, 6Music and more – setting the scene for their seventh record Good Morning Seven.

A moment in the two piece’s history, Good Morning Seven marks a significant shift for the duo who typically write and record independently from each other, in a matter of days, releasing albums, EPs and double tracks all in a quick sequence of each other. Their most ambitious project to date is made possible thanks to their own decade-long friendship. Liam and Stefan stretched days into longer periods of gestation, steadily developed their own studio spaces with gear accumulated or kindly borrowed, and a string of collaborators invited to contribute for the first time ever.

While it’s written, recorded, engineered, and produced solely by Good Morning, they further expand their world with an integrated community of contributors in mix engineer Tyler Karmen (Noname, DIIV, Devendra Banhart) with parts overdubbed at Stella Mozgawa’s (drummer of Warpaint) Joshua Tree studio, Fred Kevorkian (The White Stripes, Iggy Pop, The National, Willie Nelson) who mastered in Brooklyn, string arrangements by Chloe Sanger, Greer Clemens and Dannika Horvat on harmonies (the only guest vocalists on record to date), and Stefan’s father Glenn Blair even played woodwinds. The double album filled with strings, synths, samples and singing marks their 10th year anniversary of being a band. It’s all downhill from here.

New Jersey rock band Can’t Swim have released new single No Backbone.

“One of my favourite songwriters ever said “a good tune should take 30 minutes to write” and No Backbone certainly falls into that category. Once we finished it we went back a few times to see if we should add a part or bring more instrumentation/layers to the mix but whatever we did seemed to take away from the song rather than add to it. As time goes on I think as a band we are more and more drawn to do what excites us creatively in that moment and to do things we haven’t done before. I’m not saying this song is reinventing the wheel by any means but having a tune that feels raw and stripped down with incredibly literal lyrics (haha) is something that feels new and fresh for us to put out. All Killer No Filler as Elton John once said”

Can’t Swim will also embark on a co-headline North American tour with Belmont starting this May.

San Diego, CA – Post hardcore band SeeYouSpaceCowboy have pulled back the curtains on their highly anticipated new album Coup De Grâce. With each new single the band has a welcomed listeners into a neo-noir world of their own creation, culminating in a brand new music video for Lubricant Like Kerosene (ft. Kim Dracula).

“This album was a chance for us to refine some of the melodic elements we had recently introduced to the band while also playing around with all things and bringing back reinvented version of past parts of our identity,” shares frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. “The hope is that we made something that mixes the innate emotion of post hardcore with the cathartic essence of dancing and allure of cabaret/burlesque in a package reflecting the tale of a city on fire and it’s all to tragic individuals and their indulgence and woes.”

SeeYouSpaceCowboy recently hit the road for their North American tour with Better Lovers, Foreign Hands, and Greyhaven. The tour kicked off earlier this week in Indianapolis, with stops to follow in Albuquerque, San Diego, Seattle, Minneapolis, and more. SeeYouSpaceCowboy will also be performing at this year’s Sound and Fury Festival in Los Angeles this July.

ABOUT SEEYOUSPACECOWBOY:
Every single song SeeYouSpaceCowboy have released since forming in 2016 has been deeply rooted in the life experience and trauma of frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. Whether that’s existential anguish, substance addiction or suicidal ideation (and attempts), Sgarbossa has never been afraid to detail her pain and torment in excruciating detail. She holds nothing back, and combined with the band’s intensely dark (and darkly intense) blend of sasscore, punk, mathcore and metalcore, it’s always made for profound and devastating listening. Coup De Grâce is no exception to that rule. The band’s third album, it follows on from 2019’s The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds and 2021’s The Romance Of Affliction. But unlike those two records, which were unadulterated, no-holds-barred accounts of her life at the time, Coup De Grâce takes a different approach to its lyrics. Rather than Sgarbossa baring her most private and innermost thoughts for all to hear, on these 12 songs they’re funneled through the lives of fictional characters within a noir-inspired world of the singer’s invention.

It makes sense, then, that the record begins with something utterly unlike anything the band has ever made before: a sax-laden, smoky, late night smooth jazz ballad. It immediately draws the listener back to a time and place that exists decades in the past, a Moulin Rouge-esque club that’s not quite in the real world—and it’s within that parallel decadent and dystopian universe, and its various buildings, that everything then plays out. That ‘everything’ is just as personal as anything the band — completed by Connie’s brother Ethan Sgarbossa (guitar/vocals), Taylor Allen (bass/vocals), Tim Moreno (guitar) and AJ Tartol (drums) — have ever released, but it manifests itself across Coup De Grâce’s 12 songs in an entirely different way than before. And with valid reason, too.

“The record started as a visual idea,” explains Sgarbossa, “because when it came to lyrics, I didn’t know what the fuck to write at first. I’m not a drug addict junkie anymore, so I’m not going to write another album like The Romance Of Affliction — I can’t, and I don’t want to. So my mind wandered to things that I love, like Frank Miller’s Sin City graphic novels, where there are all these stories interlaced within a city. That led me to think about noir and neo-noir, and then pulp comics and novels from the ’40s and ’50s, which started to make it all come together lyrically and thematically, where each different song can be a different tale of the city.”

After the first minute and a bit of that opening song, however, the theatrics stop, their fuzzy, nostalgic warmth shattered by blast beats and screams, pulverizing guitars and exasperated spoken word, as the band deliver the kind of chaotic, violent noise they’re known for. And yet, as that gives way to second song Subtle Whispers To Take Your Breath Away, its ravaged, ferocious edges also reveal a new and surprising development in the band’s sound—a more catchy and accessible sense of melody influenced by what Sgarbossa terms “dancier indie-rock” influences like Bloc PartyFoals and Two Door Cinema Club. That came, she says, after she’d convinced, with some difficulty, the band to go with her proposed visual aesthetics for the record.

Recorded by Matt Squire at Mixwave Studios, Coup De Grâce is an album in the truest sense of the word. Wholeheartedly ambitious, it’s a graphic novel in musical form that not only succeeds in creating its own deliciously dark, noir universe, but one whose characters truly inhabit the world that SeeYouSpaceCowboy have invented for them. In fact, listening to it is more akin to watching it all unfold onstage. That’s partly due to the narration of Iris.EXE (who also appears on Respite For A Tragic Tale, a kind of intermission in the album’s middle), but also to the masterful execution of these songs.

Of course, it’s nothing new for the band to switch up their sound—they do that with every record — but the they’ve taken it to the next level with this one. And just as The Romance Of Affliction proved that art doesn’t always soothe suffering — Sgarbossa attempted to take her life two weeks after finishing that record — so Coup De Grâce proves that you don’t necessarily need to suffer to make great art. The singer is clean now and in a much better place than ever, but her band have also created the most ambitious, epic and accomplished album of its career.

“I hope,” she says, “that people can look at this as a complete expression—not just ‘Oh, this song has a good breakdown’, but at the whole story, the whole setting, the visuals of it all and the way the music all ties in. I hope they see the creativity of that and the risk we’ve taken by embedding Cowboy with more weirdo outside influences that you usually wouldn’t see from a band like us. It’s like a full, unified creative venture, and something we put a lot of work into, so I hope they appreciate the weirdness of it. I feel like a lot of times people hear clean singing and more melody from a heavy band and think they’re selling out. But no — we’re actually technically weirder on this record than we’ve ever been.”

With that, it’s time to put your best shoes on. You’re going to need them as you dance inside the fire.
