Spiderbait Announce ‘Key Of J’ Tour

Iconic Aussie band Spiderbait have today announced their national Tour In The Key of J, a run of unique and special shows dedicated entirely to celebrating the legacy of their revolutionary bass player Janet English, in support of their new album, Sounds in The Key of J, released today, alongside the official video for their first new single in nine years, My Car’s A UFO.

Their first headline tour since their sellout Ivy & The Big Apples tour in 2017, this distinctive set of shows will kick off in Sydney on July 8, before moving through Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, Adelaide and will finish up in Hobart on October 15.  The band will also be appearing at Groovin The Moo Maitland, Canberra and Bendigo in April, and Valleyways Festival in Camden NSW in September.

There will be a Spiderbait, venue and box office database presale from Thursday 14 April 9am AEST before tickets go onsale to the general public on Thursday 21 April 9am AEST.

Janet’s songs are special. And over the past 30 years she’s written so many beautiful ones, but also others that hit you like a lighting bolt. The Key of J Tour will be a unique show – like nothing we’ve done before – it’ll be us celebrating Janet’s work in Spiderbait, and also the release of the double album collection of her songs Sounds in the Key of J,” explains Kram. “We can’t wait for this tour to start and to perform so many of her songs live – for me personally, it’ll be very moving, and to quote Janet directly… fucken awesome!”

Kram was going on about the compilation idea – and initially, I said ‘hell no’. I kinda said ‘OK’ to shut him up… And here we are!” jokes Janet. “It’s been a tough few years and music really got me through the lockdowns. I still can’t quite believe we’ll be out touring again soon and for The Key of J tour, I’m super humbled and slightly terrified. I’ve missed that energy and that connection live music makes, being part of that exchange is one of the most amazing privileges.”

So happy to have a tour coming up with my two best friends, especially to celebrate the Janet dynamic of our band,” adds Whitt.

The story of Spiderbait is an unlikely but heartwarming one – three friends from a small Australian country town taking on the music scene, and emerging triumphantly 30 years later, friendship intact, and now one of the biggest and best rock bands on the national landscape. Taking inspiration from far-reaching influences from all sides of the musical spectrum (everything from Slayer to The Bangles), Spiderbait took their fervent thrash-pop from their tiny hometown of Finley in NSW down to Melbourne and immersed themselves in the rich, fertile creative scene.  From there they quickly consolidated their status as national treasures, with their popularity spanning three decades with no signs of abating.  Spiderbait have released seven acclaimed albums, which have all racked up gold, platinum or double platinum status and have combined Australian sales of over one million units and over 500 million global streams.  They have also secured pretty much every accolade there is to achieve on the Australian scene, having taken home numerous ARIA Awards, chalked up a number one single with their cover of Leadbelly’s Black Betty in 2004, and were the first Australian act to top the prestigious triple j Hottest 100 with Buy Me A Pony in 1996.

Spiderbait is Janet English on bass, Kram on drums and lead vocals, and Whitt on guitar.

Tickets are on sale from Thursday 21 April at 9am AEST from www.spiderbait.net.au

Meshuggah – Immutable

Review by Mitch Charlton

The lords of the polyrhythm are back with their ninth studio album Immutable and even after 30 years, Meshuggah is still killing it and showing the world they can write some incredible music. Straight off the bat, from the opening track Broken Cog, you know you’ve put on a Meshuggah album, it's their sound, their riff style, you know it’s going to be good, and you know you’ll get what you want out of it.

This album blends amazingly, the song progression from track 1 to track 13, over 60-Minutes of riffing, flows like a river, Immutable is incredibly well written and produced, which you’ve come to expect from this band. This is the kind of album you should have on and listen to in its entirety. Whether the album lyrically is conceptual or not, I am unsure, but the music definitely sounds like it is or at least produced in a way to be cinematic or soundtrack-esque and even has a 9:30 minute instrumental, They Move Below, about halfway through the album. This song breaks up and revitalizes the album, flow, its starts slow and builds all over again to then bring you into Kaleidoscope which brings it straight back into the single string chugginess. On my first play-through of the album, I put it on and just listened without really taking note of a track change and then realised I was halfway through the album, it's just ebbs and flows in the right places.

One thing I have always loved about this band, regardless of what they are playing, you are always able to find the beat and headband along. These songs aren’t riddled with changing riffs, crazy interludes, or bridges, they are generally a couple of different riffs per song and then fleshed out with some lead work here and there. It really gives you time to enjoy the riff and get into the flow of the song, sometimes I find in prog metal that bands try and cram as many riffs into a song as they can and you get “Oh that’s a killer riff….. and it's gone” you don’t find that with Immutable.

The three singles released from this album, The Abysmal Eye, Lighting the Shortening Fuse and I Am The Thirst will give you a slight taster of the album, pretty good choices from Immutable to show off. The Abysmal Eye has a film clip that is visually stimulating as there is a ton of imagery flowing across the screen, vast deserts and of course, eyes everywhere. My favourite track off the album is Ligature Marks, this is ridiculously heavy and ambient. The repeating rhythm just hypnotizes you into head banging, you can’t help it.

Hearing this album, you can hear how Meshuggah have really paved the way for Modern Metal and their influence on the scene, whether the current bands are conscious of it or not. They are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to their craft and this album just further cements that in. I hope that by the time they get to tour this and even get to Australia, they are all fit and fighting, the drummer, and goddamn WHAT a drummer, Tomas Haake has been suffering from a skin condition that has caused issues playing but you wouldn’t even notice from listening to this. Meshuggah are unstoppable and Immutable.

The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain

Review by Mitch Charlton

For me, Watain are the epitome of Black Metal, they are pure aggression, ambient, and moody but above all else, there has always been conviction in their music. You know they believe in what they write about. I enjoy music a lot more if a band can make me as a listener, believe that they believe or stand behind what they are writing about, and with Watain, there is no second-guessing. You know they mean business.

Watain are back with The Agony & Ecstasy of.. their 7th studio album and this is a punch in the face or the petrol on the fire that the Black Metal world needs. This album is aggressive and intense, just as their fans expect, and throughout their endeavor to create brutal and threatening music, there is no clarity lost in their sound. Everything is crystal clear but, on each listen, I find more layering in the music, little guitar or bass melodies like in the doom-laden We Remain, there is always more to find and take from their music. Where the music may slow down in pace, it makes up for in mood or atmosphere, it never feels or sounds less intense regardless of what they are playing.

The two singles released for this album are The Howling and Serimosa, good choices that show off the two moods of the album. The Howling reminds me of Lawless Darkness sort of riffing, a good Black N Roll vibe, whereas Serimosa has a more ambient reverb sound, and the Bassline and Kick pattern really drives home that rhythm at the heart of the song. This album has made incredible use of reverb, the drums sound massive! It is a classic Watain sound, I’ve always enjoyed how their drums sound on an album. The mixing of the guitar and bass is a classic Black Metal sound with the use of tremolo guitars and colder sounding bass holding it all together and providing you ample chance to get into a Black N Roll mood to headbang along from start to finish.

My personal favourites off this album are We Remain and Septentrion. These two stood out just for the epic sounds the tracks provide. We remain is a slower doomier piece featuring guest vocals from Farida Lemouchi, who is the voice of The Devil’s Blood, a band that influences Watain, also another band that practices what they preach, definitely check them out! It reminded me of how They Rode On fit into Wild Hunt, it has a completely different sound to other tracks, a complete darkened affair. Where it lacks the pace and ferocity of other tracks on this album, the intensity and atmosphere are kept evident. Septentrion, the album ender brings it home amazingly, this epic track should be played loud for you to fully immerse yourself in the music. I hope this one makes the live set; it would be incredible on the stage.

Watain live shows are just as dangerous as their music sounds, not in a physical sense but from the gigs that I’ve been to see them, they do incredibly well at proving their conviction and message in their music, it’s animalistic, the feeling they provoke in the audience. The Agony and Ecstasy of.. is quite a fitting name given that these guys most likely went through both of these stages whilst writing this album and they will bring this energy to their live performance and the crowd will have the same feelings. With an already incredible catalogue of material, this album only adds fuel to the fire!

PHIL JAMIESON Announces First-Ever Solo Album ‘SOMEBODY ELSE ‘ – OUT JULY 29

Phil Jamieson – frontman/singer/songwriter/guitarist for Grinspoon – has today announced the July 29 release of his first-ever solo album Somebody Else and released a single of the same name.

The announcement comes as Phil prepares for rare performances with his old mates at Splendour in The Grass and Springloaded.

“Phil Jamieson had a choice. Come back as the cryogenically frozen rockstar from Grinspoon’s halcyon days or level up with swinging widescreen pop that shows off his acting chops and matured pipes. ‘Somebody Else’ opts for the latter, a bait ‘n’ switch belter that goes from collective introspection to busting out of the cocoon a beautiful butterfly. Sounds like a hit.” – Mikey Cahill

LISTEN TO THE SINGLE ‘SOMEBODY ELSE’ AND PRE-ORDER THE ALBUM SOMEBODY ELSE, AVAILABLE FROM JULY 29, HERE.

The single “Somebody Else” has already been described by one insider as bearing connections to an early Grinspoon favourite. ‘“My friend Ben Rosen – who happened to record the first demo version of “Somebody Else” – described it as the sequel to “More Than You Are”, explains Phil. ”I hadn’t seen/heard it like that but I kind of get it.”

Whether or not that connection is there, “Somebody Else” – which was co-produced by Phil and Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy – is an immediate and arresting number that shows that Phil has lost none of his songwriting flair and bodes well for the upcoming debut solo album.

Phil has been working on his solo career for some years. Indeed, some of his ‘new’ material pre-dates his role in the Australian stage production of American Idiot. He has, however, up until now been nervous to christen it with an album. The long gestation of the album’s first single shows something of the struggle:

“It was born at Blueys Beach a few moons ago. It started life as a slinky Rolling Stones-type jam – with a bit more strut. Then Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy got his hands on it and changed it around, then I redid it as a dream pop major seventh sort of thing. That didn’t work so I went back to Oscar, and we redid it in July/August last year, in an industrial area of Dandenong situated at the end of a cul de sac surrounded by Boats/Solar/Brothels.”

“The collective fear and loathing which has gone into releasing this has sometimes seemed insurmountable. But it’s a bit like an election, innit? If not now, when? If not me, who? Thanks for listening regardless, I hope you get a kick out of it…”

With Somebody Else the album due out July 29, Phil has not got too much longer to feel the fear. And all who have heard the record say that he’s got nothing to worry about anyway.

As that doyen of the arts, Tim Rogers says of it: “Phil’s puckish performance style is underscored by a voice that can turn choirboy or demon’s spawn in a blinding grin. This has at times overshadowed his humour and empathy but no more. Teasing open his lapels to show heart and scars, but also hope and the lessons learnt from throwing yourself into this art that compels and damns us. Pop music with fire and finesse.”

The release of “Somebody Else” is accompanied by a video directed by Arlo Cook. Filmed in Melbourne, Phil enlisted cast and crew members from his time on American Idiot to lend a hand and the video sees Phil playing many roles from a cinema attendant, lasagne delivery driver & motorbike mechanic. “It was really fun working with Phil, he turned on all the charm and gave us plenty of fun moments to use,” says Arlo.

To celebrate the release, Phil will be hitting the road with bandmates Sam Raines on drums and Rob Muiños on bass. Phil’s tour will begin July 27 in Eltham in Northern NSW. Supporting Phil on tour will be The Pictures – who are back in their original form after 18 years. Led by Davey Lane, they are currently working on a new LP with a single out soon.

Somebody Else the album will be released July 29 on vinyl, CD and digitally through Cheersquad Records & Tapes, the Melbourne-based label run by Wally Kempton from The Meanies and Even.

Phil Jamieson has spent the last quarter-century fronting one of Australia’s popular and successful bands. An accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist, Jamieson’s generation-defining lyrics and vocal melodies first became etched into rock fans’ DNA in 1995, when the Lismore-born quartet he helped form as an 18-year-old rode a new wave of alternative music to become the first act Unearthed by national youth radio station triple j with its debut single “Sickfest”.

So began a love affair that maintained its heat and passion for over one thousand live shows, six consecutive Top 10 debuts and multi-platinum album sales. That initial romance with triple j’s listeners blossomed into full-bloom infatuation: an incredible 17 Grinspoon songs have polled in Hottest 100 countdowns over the years, led by the much-loved ‘Chemical Heart’ (#2 in 2002; #63 in 2013’s Hottest 100 of All-Time).

Jamieson’s live performance talents have continued to diversify and develop as he has explored new stages and formats. Embracing a solo career, Jamieson also made the transition from live music venues to the boards of theatres around the country in 2017, being cast as St. Jimmy in the Australian stage production of American Idiot. The Broadway musical made an impactful debut with its initial Australian premiere in Brisbane, leading to a national tour in 2018 – a performance that earned Jamieson acclaim: “Phil Jamieson carried the role in Perth, and absolutely nailed it. Jamieson has more of a swagger than an in-your-face psychopathic Jimmy, which I enjoyed more than I expected…whenever Jimmy is on stage, it’s difficult to focus on anything else.” – SYN MEDIA

As well as working on his solo career in recent years, Jamieson has also been involved in several philanthropic and industry-specific initiatives.

In 2013, he co-founded the Rock N Ride tour for the National Youth and Mental Health Foundation, headspace. Bringing awareness to mental health issues faced by young people, the initiative saw a group of media figures, musicians and friends of Jamieson’s engage with local communities across a five-day motorcycle road trip, taking in over 5000km on the road. Additionally, profits from Jamieson’s solo touring have been donated to the national initiative Support Act, who continues to assist and uplift those in the music industry who are in need.

Since 2015, Jamieson has also been an industry judge for the Australian Music Prize, arguably the most prestigious award in Australian music.

From fronting a generation-defining band, enjoying success as a solo artist and in the musical theatre world, as well as using his skills behind the scenes across numerous projects; Jamieson remains a multi-faceted creative, 27 years on from his debut.

LOREN KATE Shares New Single And Video ‘ONE OF THESE DAYS’

Spellbinding indie-folk artist Loren Kate has returned with a brand new single One Of These Days, a raw and rousing track straddling intimate thematics and warm sonic simplicity. Recorded a year ago, this captivating new song releases today alongside an accompanying music video, poetically reflecting the stark and moving subject matter woven by Loren’s own personal journey. Working alongside filmmaker Brad Halstead and producer Shane Nicholson, One Of These Days also marks an emotive taste of things to come ahead of the release of Loren’s upcoming new album Nobody Knows, due out on May 20.

One Of These Days continues Loren’s knack for weaving personal stories and challenging life experiences into glowing concoctions, specifically detailing the heartache of watching her brother struggle with drug addiction while also instilling a sense of hope against all the odds. Softly flowing with elegant and dominantly acoustic instrumentation, driving percussion, and Loren’s silky rasp, One Of These Days is equally heart-rending and bewitching, offering a moving slice of fresh indie-folk that reaches delicately into your soul. Speaking about the extremely personal nature of the track, Loren says, “I stood in my brother’s shoes to write ‘One Of These Days’. He has struggled for almost as long as I can remember with a drug addiction. We were really close growing up and I spent so much of my earlier years thinking I was responsible for making his life better. That I had to somehow fix things. I have had to distance myself from that idea now, but still spend plenty of time trying to understand him, putting myself in his shoes and trying to work out where it all started. So I wrote this song. It’s a song about finding yourself at rock bottom, starting with nothing, and finding the tools to build a way out of heartbreak and shattered circumstances.”

The video for One Of These Days embraces these stirring overtones, with Loren and filmmaker Brad Halstead tapping into an untouched, neglected property to bring to life the trauma and visceral pain laying within the song’s lyrical content. Opening on a static-filled TV, the clip powerfully brings anguish and permeating hope to live in a decaying home, interspersed with shots of happier days, as Loren explains, “My friends recently bought a property and with the property came an old house that no one had set foot in since 1995. The place was trashed, filthy and animals had literally taken over, eaten everything they could and all the life that remains there now are some desperate rats living in the Tupperware cupboard. As soon as I saw it I thought ‘someone has to film something in here’. The house is almost a representation of my brother’s head. That push and pull of wanting things to be different, but finding it so bloody hard to take that first step. To step outside.”

This talented South Australian singer-songwriter, already increasingly revered for her sharp storytelling, country and folk flavours and endearing Australian charm, has continually traversed the odds personally and professionally to conjure her honest and exquisite creations – including multiple delays and setbacks that meant One Of These Days sat lying in wait for twelve months before its final release. The equivalent of a warm hug in the midst of a battering storm, this latest track saw Loren team up with ARIA and Golden Guitar-winning songwriter and producer Shane Nicholson, with Shane also recording her impending new album Nobody Knows, releasing on May 20. A stunning and sensitive scene-setter for the undeniable beauty that will continue to emerge in 2022, Loren is entirely armed to unleash her latest creation into the world, as she explains, “There have been so many delays and setbacks that it actually feels like such a relief to finally let this song sail into the world. I haven’t released anything for a few years so feel very excited to bring something new into the world.”

One Of These Days is out now.

NOTHING MORE Unveil Official Music Video For “Turn It Up Like (Stand In The Fire)”

Multi-GRAMMY-nominated rock act NOTHING MORE just dropped the official music video for their new song “TURN IT UP LIKE (Stand in the Fire).”

The track, released via Better Noise Music last Friday, gives fans a first taste of the band’s long-awaited new studio album due later this year. The new visual, directed by Robyn August (Snoop Dogg, Pitbull), continues the band’s striking red and white color schemes used on their last album and showcases the intense and urgent energy of the song’s lyrics. Co-written by all four band members, the track is an unapologetic sonic rejection of the divisive, digitally-drowned state of the world with lyrics like: “All my friends are dead/ They all got fucked by the internet/ All my friends are dead/ Our brain’s bein’ bugged by the media.”

Frontman Jonny Hawkins comments on the video. “Something we’ve always pushed for as a band is to question everything. And I think we’ve just gone through a period where it had been unfashionable to question things. Because if you did, you were the pariah, you were the outcast, the other. For the last few years, I’ve felt like an animal in a cage, just pacing, and my teeth are showing more. I had nowhere to vent that rage and that frustration until we put it into this song. I think a lot of people feel this way. You saw it spill over into riots and protests. There’s all this stuff just pent up inside people. Thankfully, we’re going back out on the road soon, so I’ll have somewhere to put it.

The upcoming album is the highly anticipated follow-up to NOTHING MORE’s 2017 LP The Stories We Tell Ourselves, which earned the band three GRAMMY nominations, including Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song and Best Rock Recording for the single “Go To War.” This new track and accompanying video come ahead of the album’s official first radio single, which is set for an April 29 release across streaming and digital platforms. Stay tuned for more details coming from the band’s official social media channels.

ABOUT NOTHING MORE

Rock audiences count NOTHING MORE among the most cherished acts, the kind of band who straddle the line between populism and intimacy with every performance. The San Antonio, Texas-born quartet builds unapologetically massive anthems from catchy hooks. Crowd-pleasers clear a path for heady, confessional, thought-provoking emotionalism. Fresh rewards reveal themselves with repeat listens, welcoming like-minded seekers with rich melodicism, like the best of Deftones or Tool.

Those who saw the band on tour with hard rock heavyweights like Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch, Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, and Disturbed will attest to what The Guardian observed: “There’s a sophistication to NOTHING MORE’s angst that raises them above the tumult-tossed pit.”

Kerrang! named NOTHING MORE one of 22 Artists Shaping the Future of Rock, alongside Nine Inch Nails, Twenty One Pilots, and Bring Me The Horizon. And frontman Jonny Hawkins, who met guitarist Mark Vollelunga before they were old enough to drive, appeared with Billie Joe Armstrong, Dave Grohl, and Hayley Williams in the English tastemaker’s Top 50 Greatest Rockstars in the World.

Hawkins and Vollelunga started the band in 2003 and were quickly joined by bassist Daniel Oliver and later by drummer Ben Anderson. The band’s blend of explosive bombast and nuanced storytelling resulted in a half dozen Top 10 singles at Mainstream Rock Radio, including the No. 1 hit “Go to War” and the Sirius XM Octane song of the decade and Active Rock chart-topper “This is the Time (Ballast).” The Stories We Tell Ourselves earned a head-turning three Grammy nominations. They’re set to follow it up with a new album in 2022, which is filled with their most philosophical and primal music to date. The first offering, “TURN IT UP LIKE,” released in March 2022, is a fitting first taste of what’s to come.

NOTHING MORE appeals to fans of Linkin Park, Incubus, Rage Against The Machine, and all crucial acts that stoke relatable passion with authenticity and integrity. Memorize the arena-ready hooks. Get mesmerized by the intimate, communal live show. Dig deeper down the rabbit hole into the work of philosophers and artists like Eckhart Tolle, Carl Jung, and Alan Watts, who inspire the band. There’s a place for every type of rock fan with NOTHING MORE. Built to last, here to stay.
