THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT ANNOUNCE ’21 YEARS OF BEGINS HERE’ BY DEMAND REGIONAL TOUR WITH SPECIAL GUESTS HANDS LIKE HOUSES

ANNOUNCE ’21 YEARS OF BEGINS HERE’
BY DEMAND REGIONAL TOUR FOR EARLY 2025
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS HANDS LIKE HOUSES

Get set to revisit where it all began for iconic Aussie rockers The Butterfly Effect, with the quartet today announcing a massive regional run in 2025, celebrating 21 years since the release of their seminal debut album Begins Here. By popular demand off the back of their hugely successful 2024 capital city 20 Years Of Begins Here national tour, and with destinations voted by the fans themselves, The Butterfly Effect’s 21 Years Of Begins Here 2025 regional tour will span 25 dates around the country from late January through to March, with the quartet returning to new and familiar stages playing Begins Here in its entirety – and beyond!

“For this tour, we basically threw it open to the fans to tell us where they wanted us to play!” shares drummer Ben Hall. “We put most of the suggestions into a voting form, the punters voted, and from there, we made the final cut. Some towns had a massive amount of interest, but unfortunately, finding a venue proved too difficult this time around. Next time, we might just bring a stage on the back of a truck!”

The 21 Years Of Begins Here regional tour in 2025 will kick off on Thursday January 30 in Cairns before journeying to Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone, Caloundra, Ipswich, the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Gosford, Wollongong, Penrith, Dee Why, Albury, Torquay, Ferntree Gully, Frankston, Margaret River, Bunbury, Fremantle, Joondalup, Castlemaine, Mildura, Mount Gambier, and Pooraka, and closing out proceedings on Friday March 14 in Darwin.

Tickets for the 21 Years Of Begins Here regional tour are available now from thebutterflyeffectband.com.au.

Releasing in 2003, Begins Here immediately turned heads reaching #23 on the ARIA Charts, topping the independent charts and went on to be certified gold in 2006. Boasting enduring favourites in the form of singles Crave, Beautiful Mine, Always and One Second Of Insanity, with the latter two tracks also snagging #99 and #68 respectively on triple j’s Hottest 100 in 2004, Begins Here powerfully paved the way for The Butterfly Effect’s worldwide legacy, with international touring and high-profile festival appearances swiftly following the album’s release. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Begins Here earlier this year with a huge national Australian tour, the chance to carry the festivities into 2025 to regional Australia, with Canberra rockers Hands Like Houses also along for the ride, is one equally exciting for the band themselves as much as it is for the fans, as vocalist Clint Boge shares, “It feels amazing to still be doing what we love and to be celebrating 21 years of our first album is very humbling. I never envisioned having a career spanning three decades, but I am very grateful and eternally thankful to the fans, friends and people who have helped along the way and made it possible.”

A group significantly well-versed in writing, recording and life on the road, The Butterfly Effect remain one of the all-time Australian greats of their generation, from their critically acclaimed releases through to their voracious live shows, both at home and abroad. And while the trademark Butters sound has been one that has endured, evolved and thrived since the band’s inception, the quartet’s distinct brand of distorted emotive rock that pays homage to the likes of Silverchair, Helmet, Rage Against the Machine, Iron Maiden, Faith No More, Muse and Deftones has remained in hot demand, with their most recent material showcasing that time has boldly sharpened their already formidable sonic wares, and that The Butterfly Effect remain a force to be reckoned with.

Releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2001, The Butterfly Effect’s trajectory into the mainstream eye was nothing short of explosive, with their breakout single Crave sparking national radio airplay, record deals and performances when Livid Festival and Homebake were in their prime. Following the release of Begins Here in 2003, The Butterfly Effect cemented their reputation on a worldwide scale, ultimately going on to release three top 10 charting albums, with 2006’s Imago, 2008’s Final Conversation of Kings and, following an extended hiatus, their most recent work with 2022’s IV.

Locked and loaded to perform Begins Here in its entirety across regional Australia in 2025, along with some other gems taken from the extensive and enduring Butters back catalogue, the upcoming 21 Years Of Begins Here Tour will be one for the ages. And, as Ben Hall concludes, some of the upcoming towns and cities will offer the band a chance to revisit familiar ground, as well as tick off a few new locations for good measure. “We haven’t visited some of these towns in over a decade — possibly even longer!” says Hall. “And come to think of it, some of these towns we’ve never visited at all! Fans can expect the album in its entirety, with a splash of the back catalogue to boot! For us, we love playing, and as long as we’re not losing a tonne of money to put the show on, we’ll pretty much play anywhere, anytime!”

Tickets for the upcoming 21 Years Of Begins Here regional tour are available now from thebutterflyeffectband.com.au.

Good Things Festival 2024 Line-Up Announcement

HAVE WE GONE MAD?
GOOD THINGS IS BACK, AND IT’S ENTIRELY BONKERS!

Are you ready for the madcap chaos of Australia’s largest travelling music festival? Good Things season returns with a head-spinning lineup fit for a fever dream. Across three East Coast dates, this year’s Good Things Festival will deliver a trip down the rabbit hole with a stacked bill of international heavyweights, old favourites, hungry up-and-comers, and Aussie staples. And in a boon for younger attendees, Sydney’s Centennial Park festival date will be a 16+ event for the first time!

No one has cultivated a cult of personality quite like KORN. As the coveted headliners for Good Things Festival 2024, the Californian nu-metal pioneers will be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of their landmark self-titled debut album and a career trajectory that speak volumes: two GRAMMY® Award wins, multi-platinum album certifications, and over 40 million records sold worldwide. Continually pushing the limits of the alternative, metal, and rock across their back catalogue, KORN’s unwavering sonic vision incorporates everything from dubstep and hip-hop to the bagpipe sections of frontman Jonathan Davis. Forever for the freaks, KORN’s Good Things appearance will find them in fine form and off the leash.

Seeing SUM 41 will be a bittersweet occasion for dedicated Aussie fans, as the Good Things Festival acts as the band’s last-ever ‘Tour of the setting Sum’ tour Down Under. Pulling from their formative album trinity—All Killer No Filler (2001), Does This Look Infected? (2002), and Chuck (2004)—along with their recent Heaven :x: Hell double-LP, the Canadian rockers are determined to go out with a bang, one befitting their status as a beacon of millennial domination. Come for the high-energy pop punk, and stay for the heavy metal anthems.

Speaking of anthems, it’s hard to deny the impact VIOLENT FEMMES have had on the broad history of alternative music. The Milwaukee outfit have been festival mainstays throughout their awe-inspiring 40-year career, and direct influences on Pink, John Cusack, Mark Morris, The Pixies, and more. German heavy arena sensation ELECTRIC CALLBOY known for their viral hits like Hypa Hypa, We Got The Moves, RATATATA and their pulsing cover of Cascada’s Everytime We Touch have proven that the group’s blend of retro pop synths, arena rock, and metalcore is both a recipe for chart-topping success and captivating audiences worldwide.

After bringing their own curated The World Is A Vampire Festival to Australia last year, and the recent release of the band’s thirteenth studio album, Aghori Mhori Mei, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman BILLY CORGAN will wow the Good Things Festival crowd with a spirited set supported by The Delta Riggs as his backing band. Festival punters will be treated to tracks from CORGAN’s expansive solo catalogue as well as songs he’s written for The Smashing Pumpkins. MASTODON have racked up numerous accolades that transcend their sludge metal origins. Alongside collaborations with Game of Thrones, Adult Swim, and DC Comics, the Atlanta quartet finally took home a GRAMMY® Award after six career nods. 2021’s Hushed & Grim double-LP took meditations on grief and transformed them into moments of melodic mourning and raging bursts of energy. Guitarist/songwriter KERRY KING will bring a taste of his trademark fury to the Good Things Festival for 2024. With KING’s first solo LP outside of thrash titans Slayer, From Hell I Rise, unleashed on the world, expect a dose of blunt-force riffage and pointed lyrical themes with some Slayer classics thrown in as the kicker.

The long-awaited return of THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM to Australian shores has been almost a decade in the making. With the release of their highly anticipated comeback album, History Books, in October last year, it’s now Australia’s turn to be a part of the band’s rebirth. Newfound ARIA Hall of Famers JET will also get their shine on as they take to the stage to celebrate the recent twentieth anniversary of their multi-platinum debut album, 2003’s Get Born. Fans can expect to hear radio rock hits like Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Rollover DJ, and more. With their reputation as seasoned pros and one of the country’s most incredible live acts, punk rockers THE LIVING END will get the crowd pumping with iconic anthems like Second Solution and Prisoner of Society, making their only live shows for 2024 ones to remember. After playing their seminal Bricks Are Heavy LP on the road last year, 90s punk icons L7 return to give audiences another taste of Californian riot grrrl history including favourites like Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Wargasm and more.

Sydney futurists NORTHLANE are global ambassadors for Australian metal, known for their exhilarating live show and unrivalled creative expression. With consecutive ARIA Award wins and #1 chart debuts already in the bag, the band’s latest Mirrors Edge EP is their most daring effort yet. Fans will also see BOWLING FOR SOUP on their first trip Down Under in over fifteen years. The Texan pop punkers are fresh off a pair of 2024 Download Festival performances, and celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their fan-favourite A Hangover You Don’t Deserve LP. While 2024 already belongs to ALPHA WOLF, their Good Things appearance is set to cap off the metalcore crew’s most successful year to date. The Melbourne quintet just wrapped up a completely sold-out Australian headline tour following the release of their acclaimed third full-length, Half Living Things.

For the alternative rockers, Orlando emo sensation SLEEPING WITH SIRENS are no strangers to devoted Australian crowds, and their Good Things Festival set will deliver on stratospheric hooks and huge sing-a-longs. Not to be outdone, Brisbane’s THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT will bring their emotionally charged performance to the festival stage, anchored by frontman Clint Boge’s powerful croon. 90s flagbearers 311 were last in the country in 1998 and have since maintained their standing as one of the genre’s most entertaining outfits with a groove-laden sound dipping into rap, reggae, and funk.

Award-winning songwriter, artist, and novelist AViVA will rally her “Outsider” community to the call with her idiosyncratic spin on pop-rock immediacy. Sacramento’s DESTROY BOYS will be eager to unleash tracks from their brand new Funeral Soundtrack #4 LP and expand on their bratty punk origins. With a career spanning half a century, legacy rockers DRAGON will showcase their heavy prog pedigree and penchant for soul-flavoured melodies. Meanwhile, DIY rock troubadour FRANK TURNER AND THE SLEEPING SOULS will mark another return to Australia as part of the Good Things Festival, this time supporting his acclaimed new album, Undefeated.

Pennsylvanian outfit FROM ASHES TO NEW have climbed to the front of the rock vanguard, embracing the freedom of hybridity and experimenting with hard rock, hip-hop, electronic, and alternative sounds. Known for stretching genre descriptors into alluring new forms, alt artist GRANDSON has netted over one billion streams and a dizzying list of high-profile collaborators including Mike Shinoda, Travis Barker, and Tom Morello. Backing up with another trip Down Under following 2023’s ‘The Midnight Demon Club’ tour, Cape Cod iconoclasts HIGHLY SUSPECT will bring their rule-breaking rock philosophy to the festival stage with cuts from their shiny new full-length, As Above, So Below. Swedish heavy purveyors IMMINENCE will introduce Aussie crowds to the uncompromising alt-metalcore vision of their bludgeoning fifth full-length,The Black—this is one set metalheads do not want to miss.

KILLING HEIDI will throw it back to the early 00s when their album debut Reflector became a four-time ARIA winner and mega-smash single Weir was an inescapable earworm, playing the record in full for the Good Things Festival crowd. As one of Britain’s breakout heavy exports, LOATHE have built a reputation for their intense, multi-media live show, as seen on a recent North American tour run supporting Knocked Loose. Mixing metalcore with shades of electronica, pop, and post-hardcore on their stunning debut full-length, Secrets Of The Future, Sydney newcomers RELIQA will dazzle with their intricate take on progressive metal stylings. Influenced by early 90s and 00s pop-punk, TAYLOR ACORN’s sound is imbued with youthful exuberance and relatability, tackling mental health struggles and head-on with catchy hooks and earnest vulnerability.

2024 also marks the return of the talented STAGE 666 Artists and their carnivalesque Freak Show lounge. Witness the knife-throwing, gravity defying stunts of host Captain Ruin, or be amazed by Princess Tweedle Needle’s daring feats of bodily transgression as the “princess of pain” performs the ‘human pincushion’ act, skewering her flesh with glee, swinging a beer keg with her lady bits. Direct from the underground nightclubs of Berlin, you don’t want to miss out on STAGE 666’s guest star!

The Butterfly Effect – IV

The Butterfly Effect completely passed me by first time around. Having lived overseas for all of the 90’s and half of the 2000’s, I came home to find there had been some awesome Aussie bands that had come and unfortunately gone during that time. So how happy was I to see them reunite and to have had the opportunity to discover them and see their fantastic live shows. Imago was on repeat in my headphones for many months and they were able to fill venues playing the songs that people loved from that time. Now, after 14 years, we have a new album to savour and an accompanying tour. I am very excited to hear the new songs but have some feelings of trepidation. Will they give us the sound that made us fall in love with them to begin with? Or will they be trying something new (always fraught with danger. I still haven’t forgiven Radiohead for the wanky, self-indulgent shit they produced from in the early 2000’s).

Track one is the title track IV. An instrumental piece that builds from a very minimalist beginning to a crescendo of guitars and drums with some lovely classical string sections in the mix. If I close my eyes, I can see a darkened stage with clouds of smoke tastefully lit and the crowd going mad with expectation as this track plays to announce the arrival of the band. Goosebumps!! Great start.

Track two is Dark Light and with the opening bars, I can see we are going to be on solid ground with this album. The soaring falsetto from Clint Boge and guitar in the minor key (I think, I’m no musician) gives that atmospheric, spine tingling feeling that is what I have always associated with The Butterfly Effect. The bridge sets the scene for a very singable chorus. This will be a crowd favourite at their upcoming gigs, I have no doubt.

Track Three is Wave of Tides – Long. The lyrics seem to speak of battling demons, being lost in the battle, searching for someone to help and the hope for better. I don’t know if this was written during the pandemic but in these lyrics, I feel something of my own struggles during the last couple of years and I think this song is going to be very relatable to many people.

Track Four, Nil By Mouth starts with some serious riffage. Definitely one of the heavier tracks on the album, this will appeal to the New Metal fans out there. Clint is pulling out all of the vocal tricks on this track as he slips from his signature falsetto to some dirty vocals more akin to The Amity Affliction than TBE. Short and sweet, but will be a great one to bounce to at a gig.

Track Five is The Other Side. The intro of this track begins with a drum solo from Ben Hall and how nice is to hear a drummer get a chance to really shine on an album track. Throughout the song, the drums are front and centre while guitar and bass are more an accompaniment to this. Love it. This will be another great gig singalong, I am sure.

Track Six is So Tired. Not one of my favourites. The verses are frenetic and jarring to the senses. And all of this culminates in a beautiful chorus that is all too short before we’re back to the chaos. The saving grace is the last two minutes of the song where it settles back into more melodic territory. Some will love it, me, not so much but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Track Seven is Unbroken. Another example of the perfect chorus and I would go so far as to say, a perfect example of an alternative rock classic. Very reminiscent of some of their earlier stuff but I am in no way sorry for that. It’s heavy enough for a good head bang but is full of lifting moments and I am very surprised that this was not the first single from the album. It will definitely be a floor filler live.

Track Eight is Great Heights. And I find myself running out of superlatives. I love a song that builds and the verse and bridge to this song feel like the foothills and the wonderful chorus is the pinnacle.

Another track that I think could easily be a single. A song of many parts which fit together perfectly to be another TBE classic.

Track nine is Start Again. At first listen, I thought this felt a bit like a filler track to me, but on about the third listen, I changed my mind. The bass and drums are a real highlight of the song and it definitely confirms to the TBE winning formula.

Track ten is the first single release, Visiting Hours. The melodic guitar on its’ own is the perfect accompaniment to some typically dramatically sung lyrics. It builds, but not as much as Unbroken or Great Heights. The lead break towards the end is perfection. Perhaps picked as the first single for a more radio friendly return to the airwaves, it certainly would not have been my choice. But I think it does let fans, and new listeners to TBE know what they are about and whets the appetite for more.

I was so excited to have the chance to review this album and to say I am not disappointed is an understatement. It has all of the ingredients that made The Butterfly Effect who they are while still being new and fresh. I cannot wait to see these songs live and to see how they are accepted by old fans and new audiences alike. BRING IT ON!!!

IV is out now.
