[Review] Thy Art Is Murder @ Roundhouse, Sydney 13/01/2023

We are not spoiled with a four-band line-up of top-tier talent every day. Tonight’s show is just that. Extreme metal, western Sydney titans Thy Art Is Murder are accompanied by three international heavyweights, Spite, Chelsea Grin and Whitechapel. Strap yourself in, we’re in for a night of heavy riffs and even heavier vocals!

Californian hardcore/deathcore/downtempo maniacs Spite are kicking off the festivities, and the band I am most looking forward to seeing. As they take the stage, the sun is still in the sky leaving the Roundhouse more illuminated than usual. Frontman Darius Tehrani commands the stage with energy too large for the small space, as being the first band on the bill their drumkit is in front of another. Half of Spite’s 8-song set is taken from their latest release Dedication to Flesh, a heavy-hitting no holds barred album that delivers from opening to closing track. Lord of The Upside Down, Caved In and IED give the crowd minimal recovery time, only a chance to warm themselves up for a huge night of moshing.

I’m happy to see just how many punters came down early to catch them! Rounding out Spite’s set is Kill or Be Killed and Crumble, two monstrous songs that showcase their sound perfectly. I’m a big fan of deathcore, but there’s something about Spite’s dash of metal in the mix that really makes them stand out. Their set is far too short, although as this is only their first time in Australia, I’m hoping it’s the start of a beautiful relationship that results in many frequent visits.

Just as I’ve had time to purchase a Spite shirt from the merch booth, the lights dim for Utah’s Chelsea Grin. The last time we saw them was with Born of Osiris in 2019, and in such time they’ve released two new albums, Suffer In Hell and Suffer In Heaven and I’m looking forward to seeing them again. Opening with Recreant, we get a sense that they did not come to mess around. Desolation of Eden, the album Recreant is taken from, had a very different line up, one of the most notable is frontman Tom Barber (ex-Lorna Shore) who’s been with the group since 2018 and is one of the most talented vocalists in the scene. His ability to jump from screams and lows is seamless and astonishing, all with a smile on his face. New track The Isnis gains a great crowd response as horns are cast in the air and pits are widened. Stand outs of Chelsea Grin’s set for me personally are taken from 2018’s Eternal Nightmare, Dead Rose and Hostage.

As for Spite, Chelsea’s Grin only really tickled their catalogue of music. I sure hope next time Chelsea visit, they have a longer set to really get into how great this band is as their popularity is soaring.

I’m already beyond happy with tonight’s performance, as Tennessee’s Whitechapel arrive. I’ve been a fan of theirs since 2007’s Somatic Defilement and they will always hold a very special place for me, the excitement has gone up a notch! In the last few years, their sound has expanded from the heavy deathcore flavour we know and love. Clean vocals have seeped through the mean demeanour, as showcased in their opening track When a Demon Defiles a Witch. Phil Bozeman has a very distinctive voice and evokes monstrous growls from such a small frame with ease.

Bassist Gabe Crisp provides the low end on the strings with force while all three amazing guitarists Ben Savage, Alex Wade, and Zach Householder give their own personal touch to the songs that make Whitechapel one of the biggest heavy bands around. They steamroll through a selection of hits such as Brimstone, Doom Woods and Black Bear which gets the floor bouncing and is impossible to keep out of.

This is Exile makes us long-time fans happy, even my brother with short hair can’t help but attempt to headbang to this Whitechapel classic! A Bloodsoaked Symphony and The Saw Is The Law round out their blistering set, 8 years in the making.

The exhausted punters head to the bar and outside area for one last breath before the headliners arrive to take what’s left from this crowd’s energy tanks.

We Like To Party by The Vengaboys fills the venue, making the metal crowd laugh and dance unaware Thy Art Is Murder lurk just behind the stage. Opening with Reign of Darkness the crowd pushes out a monstrous circle pit to the dark red lights only just illuminating the band members. The crowd scream ‘You will see the true face of panic’.

Vocalist CJ McMahon’s skeletal mic stand towers over him and the front centre of the stage, forcing him to sing upwards similar to Lemmy. Tonight’s performance is a truly special one, the 10th anniversary of their second full-length album Hate being played in its entirety. The mad crowd barely have time to hi 5 their mate before we’re cast into The Purest Strain of Hate. Drummer Jesse Beahler is a madman behind the kit and keeps tempo with precise concentration. I spot him looking into the crowd and smiling at the response his band is getting from the wild Sydney crowd.

Songs such as Immolation, Dead Sun and Defective Breed annihilate the Roundhouse still cast under dark lighting and smoke, adding to the drama of the undeniably heavy music. CJ is belting out some exceptionally heavy vocals, but that doesn’t stop him from having a bright smile across his face for most of the night. The band are truly appreciative of the reception and the love is sent back in droves. Doomed From Birth rounds out the Hate album and the band takes a short break backstage, while the crowd calls out for more!
Thy Art return to the stage for 3 encore tracks, which must have been hard to choose from their catalogue. Death Squad Anthem, Holy War and Puppet Master wrap up tonight’s gruesome events. TAIM consistently delivers goods in a way that inspires unending mayhem and fan love with horns raised as they scream out the lyrics until the last note.

I feel very proud to see an Australian band reach the success that Thy Art is Murder has garnered, especially headlining a tour in their own country with three international supports.
The entire east coast run of this tour has sold out with very limited tickets left for Adelaide and Perth. Do not sleep on this tour.

With 4 spectacular deathcore acts, there really is something for everyone and even if you head down for one band, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with another.

Polaris 10 Year Anniversary Australian Tour With Special Guests Void Of Vision & Pridelands

They say time flies when you’re having fun and it’s been a hella epic ride for Sydney metalcore titans POLARIS in the last decade. So, what better way to celebrate than to throw a 10 Year Anniversary Australian tour with their friends VOID OF VISION and PRIDELANDS in tow.

Kicking off on March 3 in their hometown of Sydney and making their way across the country to Perth, the 10 Year Anniversary venues are paying homage to the debut album cycle where they sold these venues out across The Mortal Coil and Spring tours in 2017.

“Where did the years go?! Apparently, it’s been a whole decade ago since this handful of babyfaced kids from suburban Sydney finally assembled a line-up, recorded a demo and stepped onto a stage for the first time as Polaris.” Says Polaris drummer, Daniel Furnari

He adds, “Over the course of the ten years and four records that followed, we worked our way through every community hall, theatre or dive that would take us, sleeping on the floors of vans and sharehouses in the name of metalcore.

Today, this thing we built together has taken us all around the world, giving us the chance to connect with so many incredible people that now all share a role in our story.

Sometimes it feels like we’re just getting started, but as we reach this milestone it seems only right to take stock and reminisce a little about the journey so far. And what better way to do that than with an intimate retrospective tour?! We’ll be reaching right back to our early EPs and beyond to pull out some deep cuts and old faves for the first (and probably last!) time in a long while. Joining us will be our old and very dear friends in Void of Vision and Pridelands, to add some new memories to the many that we’ve already shared over the years. If you were with us back in the day at Blacktown or Sutherland, at Wrangler or the Lab, at Hot Damn or Enigma, this one is for you. You’ve all made this possible and we can’t wait to celebrate our past, present and future with you around Australia this March!”

In 2017, POLARIS released The Mortal Coil, their debut album which debuted in the top 10 ARIA charts and received an ARIA-nomination. It was followed up with 2021’s, ARIA-nominated, #3 ARIA Album chart record, The Death Of Me. They have been awarded a laundry list of accolades including triple j’s Feature Album with both albums, album of the year mentions in end of year lists and have toured across the globe.

It’s been an incredible journey for POLARIS with countless sold-out headline tours of Australia, supporting Architects and Parkway Drive around the country; five runs throughout Europe (including a series of arena shows supporting Architects, a slew of high-profile summer festival spots, Northlane and their first headline tour); four separate US tours; not to mention performing at the Download Festival, Unify Gathering in Australia, headlining Knight & Day Festival and most recently performing the 2022 Good Things Festival headlined by Bring Me The Horizon.

After unleashing the final instalment of the beloved Chronicles EP series, VOID OF VISION have not only left people longing for more, but in tandem increased curiosity and demand for what could come next. In the midst of a UK tour with Holding Absence and an appearance at the inaugural Knotfest Australia on the horizon, the band are poised to return home to continue to take the country by storm.

Melbourne-based, PRIDELANDS kicked off 2022 with the release of their highly anticipated debut studio album, Light Bends which had glowing reviews and landed them an appearance at Unify Forever in 2022 and a national regional tour with In Hearts Wake.

Set those alarm clocks and get those party vibes ready as this is a celebration you won’t want to miss. There is limited capacity and there will be no additional nights added. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya.

The Used & Papa Roach Cut My Heart Into Pieces Tour 2023 With Special Guests Coldrain

“We are more than excited to finally be back in Australia! Can’t wait to see you all there! Are you ready for the best night of your life?!?!?” – Bert McCracken, The Used

Get ready to buckle up, Australian hard-rock enthusiasts, because an electrifying, double-header extravaganza is heading your way! Legendary rock icons, THE USED and PAPA ROACH, are ecstatic to unveil their highly-anticipated Cut My Heart Into Pieces tour, which is set to storm through our shores this April, alongside special guests COLDRAIN.

“We’ve been such huge fans of THE USED forever and we are thrilled to bring this tour down under – AUSTRALIA GET READY TO GET ROWDY!”- Jacoby Shaddix, Papa Roach

For over two decades, THE USED have been releasing albums that have helped shape the alternative rock scene. Their music can be described as painful and perverse, intimate and obnoxious, aggressively heavy and irresistibly catchy, confusingly profound and primitively pedestrian – they have the power to turn songs into anthems.

With an impressive catalog that has amassed over 165 million views on YouTube, ten Billboard Hot 100 singles, and four Top 10 Debuts on the Billboard 200, THE USED reunited with long-time producer John Feldmann (Panic! At The Disco, blink-182) on their eighth studio album, Heartwork, which features guest appearances by Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333), Mark Hoppus (blink-182), Travis Barker (blink-182), and Caleb Shomo (Beartooth).

Renowned for their high-energy live performances, heart-wrenching and relatable lyrics, and a combination of pop sensibility and hard rock melodies, THE USED has made an indelible mark on fans worldwide.

PAPA ROACH, the Californian quartet, has spent over 20 years creating one of the most diverse and fearless discographies in music. With global success, they have accomplished an extraordinary volume of accolades in their career with 11 #1 and 22 Top-5 hits and over a billion views on YouTube. In 2020, they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their iconic album, INFEST.

Their eleventh studio album, EGO TRIP, is PAPA ROACH‘s boldest and most brilliant release to date. According to Kerrang!, “Papa Roach are not only still with us, but they’re an infinitely more challenging, diverse, and simply better band than the one that recorded breakthrough album Infest. New offering Ego Trip rips up any semblance of a rule book, rapping it up and rocking it out with the fervour of any of music’s bright young things.” The album connects with fans and audiences alike as it weaves and turns through anthemic hits, themes of forgiveness, emo moments, and plenty of nostalgia for the trip of a lifetime.

Japanese rock band COLDRAIN is known for their unique blend of divine melodies and the emotional sound of twin guitars and English vocals. Fronted by Masato, who is Japanese and American, they have performed at festivals around the world, including Rock Am Ring (Germany), Rock Im (Germany), Download Festival (UK), and Vans Warped Tour (US), to name a few. Their single “Mayday” featuring Ryo from Crystal Lake was featured in the TV anime show Fire Force and is the band’s biggest single to date. In 2020, COLDRAIN curated Blare Fest 2020 in their hometown of Nagoya, which drew in 40,000 people across two days, and ended their 2022 tour at Yokohama Arena to 12,000 fans.

Lineups like this don’t come around often, so grab your ticket and catch THE USED, PAPA ROACH, and COLDRAIN live in action when they bring their powerful, explosive, and high energy to a show near you.

The Vamps (UK) announces Special Guest for Upcoming ‘Greatest Hits Tour’

Having already sold out shows in Sydney and Melbourne, The Vamps along with Frontier Touring are excited to announce Sam Nelson as special guest on The Vamps’ upcoming Greatest Hits Tour.

Nelson, who is the frontman and lead vocalist for American pop rock band X Ambassadors, will join the tour in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne this February to help celebrate 10 years of The Vamps and the hits that make them so beloved across the UK and Australia.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be heading out on the road with these kind, generous, and talented dudes. The Vamps have been a band for about as long as X Ambassadors have been a band, so I feel a special kinship with them already and I can’t wait to bond with all of their fans as well. Plus, this will be my first time playing solo, just me and an acoustic guitar. I’ll be playing a mix of X Ambassadors stuff as well as debuting some stuff from my upcoming solo project, which I’m very excited about.” Sam Nelson

Final tickets to the Brisbane show are on sale now via frontiertouring.com/thevamps

X Ambassadors have released three studio records, VHS (2015), Orion (2019) and most recently, The Beautiful Liar (2021), with their most notable singles being ‘Jungle’, ‘Renegades’ and ‘Unsteady’. Their most recent LP blends genres like punk (‘Conversations With My Friends’), musical theatre (‘Theater of War’), pop-rock (‘My Own Monster’), and more. In an Instagram post about The Beautiful Liar, Nelson described it as “an album that felt as unhinged as [he] did, and as the whole world felt around [him].”

Sam is also an actor, composer, producer and lyricist, having composed music and written songs for the likes of Rihanna, Lizzo, SZA and Imagine Dragons, and created music for international blockbusters Suicide Squad, Sonic the Hedgehog, Hellboy and Transformers: The Last Knight.

In 2019 he wrote and produced three standout hits (‘Cuz I Love You’, ‘Jerome’ and ‘Heaven Help Me’) from Lizzo’s major label debut studio album Cuz I Love You and co-wrote seven of the 14 tracks (‘Kingdom of One [performed by Maren Morris]’, ‘Power Is Power [performed by SZA, The Weekend and Travis Scott]’, ‘Hollow Crown [performed by Ellie Goulding]’, ‘Baptize Me [performed by X Ambassadors feat. Jacob Banks]’, ‘From the Grave [performed by James Arthur]’, ‘Love Can Kill [performed by Lennon Stella]’ and ‘Wolf at Your Door [performed by Chloe x Halle]’) on the all-star compilation album For The Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game Of Thrones).

Sam Nelson will be hitting the road for the first time as a solo performer, playing songs from X Ambassadors, and sharing new music from his forthcoming solo project.

The Vamps have generated over 6.5 billion streams worldwide (43 million streams in Australia) and have surpassed two billion views on the band’s official YouTube channel alone. They have released five studio albums, two UK #1’s 2017’s Night & Day (Night Edition) and their latest album (2020) Cherry Blossom and two UK #2’s 2014’s Meet the Vamps and 2018’s Night & Day (Day Edition).

Having toured Australia in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the 2023 tour marks the band’s fourth run of Oz shows and couldn’t be more fitting that they return with special guest Sam Nelson to celebrate their 10-year anniversary!
