Devin Townsend – Lightwork

Strap yourselves in and get ready for another journey across the soundscapes with your friendly and loveable Canadian, Devin Townsend. You’re about to go down into a wormhole of strange and wondrous creativity coming out in aural form. Prepare for Lightwork, aptly named, this album is dynamic, creative, cinematic and above all, epic, it makes for incredibly easy listening, which is great because when it comes to Devin Townsend’s music, there are so many layers to it and you can never get everything on the first listen.

Straight off the bat, this guy’s voice is just phenomenal, the range, the way he uses it to set the mood and tone of a song, just as much as his guitars or synths, is just unreal. Yes, that might sound obvious to some people but there are bands out there who use the vocals as the filler part of the song, it’s all about a riff, definitely not the case when it comes to this guy’s music! He keeps his voice cleaner and more ethereal throughout this album but does also throw in some of his classic screams to change it up and make great use of his dynamics. The track Heavy Burden creates a strange effect with multiple voices being blended and layered over each other to sing one line, it’s incredibly well done to have it so clean, it took a few listens to grasp the full effect and hear the multiple layers, this is the kind of creativity that I appreciate, out of the normal thinking that makes the music much more interesting.

Devin Townsend is a busy man, Lightwork is the 5th album he has released in the last 2 years. He released the Quarantine Sets he streamed during 2020, then also Snuggles and The Puzzle and now releasing this little gem. Releasing this amount of content or music just goes to show that he is in this for the art and enjoys showing off his creativeness or it could be that he just needs to get all the crazy music out of his head and will just unleash it upon the world, either way, its good fun.  During the creation process there was a drop of Call of the Void that would be named one of the singles for this album, the other being Moonpeople. These two tracks are probably on the lighter sounding side of the album, but they are just as experimental as the rest. They set the tone that the vocals and synth instruments are more the focal point here than the heavier element. It’s all still there and is more the foundation or the gel holding the songs together.

It wouldn’t be a Devin Townsend album without some completely out there sounds and when you get to Dimensions and hear that incredibly in tune guitar solo (he writes in sarcastica font) you will just smile and laugh because, why the hell not!? Dissonant, I think is the term professionals use with these types of things. Heartbreaker shows a bit more of the weirder side of his creativeness with the number of layers to his music, the guitar riff in this song just has a really nice sway to it, you won’t be able to help but get into it. My favourite track on this album is Celestial Signals, this song is epic, it has a massive sound and will make an incredible addition to the live set. I can see a stadium singing and moving to this one.

From start to finish, Lightwork will have you moving and singing along in no time. It is light at times, it is heavy at times, it can also be downright strange at times, but that’s why you come along to the Devin show, something new and different.

EDGECLIFF Share New Single RUNNING ON EMPTY / New EP UPROAR out December 2

Get your motor running with the classic rock stylings of Sydney’s Edgecliff and their brand new tune Running On Empty. Officially dropping into the world today, Running On Empty is a raw and riveting peek into the band’s forthcoming debut EP Uproar, which will officially thunder into the world on Friday December 2. The band will also christen their new single with two shows in Cobar on Saturday 5 November, with an official EP launch party set to take place on Friday 7 January 2023 at Sydney’s Factory Theatre.

Channelling Aussie greats like AC/DC and The Angels, Running On Empty finds Edgecliff firing on all rock’n’roll cylinders, with the track boasting swaggering grooves, fiery guitars and raspy vocals dialled up to 11. A track that has been in the works for the band for a fair while now, Running On Empty may ultimately owe its sonic soul to classic rock, but it also itself evolved after Edgecliff were approached to write a song about the eponymous Running On Empty festival which took place in Cobar, also honouring the 1982 film of the same name. “We were asked to write a song to honour the Running On Empty festival, which took place in Cobar, a town that holds great history within the band,” shares keyboardist Nick Murace. “The festival took place in September for the 40th anniversary of the 1982 Australian film, Running On Empty. We were honoured to be given the opportunity to write this track and to play the festival!”. And of the track’s deliciously rowdy-yet-familiar flair, drummer Jacob Lock explains, “For this one we really wanted to go for an old school rock n’ roll belter to get the people dancin! It’s got that dirty rock groove that you can feel in your bones and reminds you of the old school Aussie rock we grew up on”.

Working alongside Callum Howell on producing and mixing duties, as well as the Grammy Award-nominated Mike Tucci mastering the new tune, Running On Empty is a track brimming with high octane energy and catchy melodies, while also offering an electric follow up to previous singles I’ll Be Gone and Calling For More, which will also feature on the band’s forthcoming EP Uproar. Covering everything from chest-bumping anthems amid prowling basslines (Running Out Of Luck), swooning rock ballads (Broken Album), galloping singalongs (Blackout) and balls-to-the-wall viscosity complete with sizzling guitar solos and infectious choruses (Who Are We To Be Silenced), Uproar is a genuine and ferociously fun collection of tracks that powerfully run the gamut of human experience. We recorded six out of seven songs at the beautiful Grove Studios over a week,” shares bassist Kai Stackhouse. “After many tweaks in the studio and Callum Howell’s touch, we were able to bring these songs to life. The EP is mostly about average human experiences, one of the tracks talks about heartbreak and another track explores protest and outrage. We think there is at least one song in the EP that people will find themselves attracted to as it could summarise a certain time in their lives or the world around them.”

Edgecliff will be busting out their brand new track live in action this Saturday 5 November, with a special all ages show at the Cobar Youth Centre, as well as an 18+ event the same day at the Cobar Golf Club. And that’s not all the live Edgecliff goodness on the cards, with the band locked and loaded to officially launch their new EP Uproar early in the new year on Saturday 7 January at Sydney’s Factory Theatre. As to what fans can expect at these upcoming shows, lead guitarist and vocalist Will Howell reveals, Anyone that catches one of our shows can expect a loud and energetic performance. We strive to make live shows an experience for everyone. We want everyone to leave our shows craving more.”

Bringing together five best mates hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the beating Edgecliff heart ultimately thrives on a love for songwriting, hard edge rock and the desire to create original music. With all band members currently completing apprenticeships in their respective trades, Edgecliff have creatively continued to turn heads via their upbeat and modern take on more vintage rock territory. Influenced by the likes of Powderfinger, Wolfmother and the Foo Fighters, Edgecliff have been hard at work in the studio and the jam room to ultimately deliver Running On Empty, which also marks the final single fans will hear before the release of the debut EP Uproar. And all signs are pointing to pure rock, as Will concludes “Rock’n’roll is our passion and we want to share that energy with as many people as we can!”.

Running On Empty is out today, Friday November 4.

Uproar is out Friday December 2.

Among The Restless Release New Single TORN – GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL Band Comp Heat 2

From the midst of Melbourne’s underground alt-rock scene, the raw wall of sound that is Among The Restless is making itself well and truly heard. The Naarm-based five piece are back with their powerful new single, ‘Torn’, the sonically charged belter, off their upcoming EP, which is set for release early 2023.

It’s been a stellar 2022 for the band, with ATR fever accelerating across the country with each show. The ATR journey officially began late 2019, and their sheer talent is recognised in the band’s push to pay homage to Alt/Indie and rock giants like Nothing But ThievesFoo FightersSpacey Jane and The Strokes, whilst pairing their signature new wave grit/style genre with the resonant and unique vocals of Rhett James.

After bringing their dynamic debut EP ‘Define’ to sold-out shows throughout the east of Victoria, including hometowns of Macedon and Frankston, and a whirlwind festival slot at Uncaged Festival alongside legends of the Australian scene like WolfmotherBanks Arcade, The SuperjesusYou Am I and Dregg, the boys are keeping the momentum going with their brand new single ‘Torn’, the first taste of their upcoming EP.

‘Torn’ sees ATR recounting the uncomfortable feelings involved with being unsure of your goals and place in the world. It’s a shared experience for many, and one that guitarist and co-songwriter, Lachie Dunn believes needs to be confronted head on.

“Everyone has felt like this one way or another. Not knowing whether or not you are doing the right thing or feeling lost. But you can almost be certain that everything will be okay if you stick with it.”
Collaborating once again with acclaimed producer Steve James (Sex PistolsThin LizzyThe Screaming Jets) in Meanjin/Brisbane’s Red Engine Recording Studios, the band are ready to hand-deliver a brand new set of songs, including the lead single ‘Torn’. ATR’s new EP is a brilliant step forward, honing a new sound of fused genres, thunderous instrumentation, and raw, emotionally-charged vocal melodies.

It has been action stations for the Among The Restless boys having just secured one of the coveted spots in the Good Things Festival Band Competition.  You can see them in HEAT 2 next Wednesday 9th November at Stay Gold Melbourne.

So come along and have a drink and cast your vote it is going to be a huge night and its free entry, so why the hell not!!

Remi Wolf to make Australian & New Zealand debut this January

Penny Drop and Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce California native Remi Wolf will bring her live show to Australia and New Zealand for the very first time in January 2023. Performing her debut Antipodean headline dates at Melbourne’s Forum on 5 January and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on 6 January, the burgeoning funk-pop star will jump the pond to take in Auckland and Wellington on 10 and 11 January respectively.

Wolf also performs at Beyond The ValleyWildlands & Field Day in December and January.

Audiences ‘immediate response’ to her talent instilled in Wolf a sense of confidence that carried her through music school and into a post-grad stint gracing local Los Angeles venues.

“Before I really fell in love with writing, I loved performing,” says Remi. “That’s always been my home base, it lights something up in my soul that is never lit up at any other time in my life. It’s a very powerful thing — the most expressive I feel like I will ever get.”

Making waves with her 2019 track ‘Guy’, Wolf garnered attention from indie-pop darling Still Woozy and scored a spot opening on their tour. Three critically acclaimed EP’s followed – You’re A DogI’m Allergic To Dogs and We Love Dogs! — mostly created in makeshift studios with her co-producer Jared Soloman and limited gear. Apple would later recruit Wolf to soundtrack an iPhone commercial, and she’d receive major co-signs from the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, John Mayer, Dominic Fike and more.

With her debut album Juno (2021), Wolf dabbles in funk, pop, indie, punk, dance and everything in between. NME applauded the offering as “funk pop at its brightest and boldest” and Pitchfork describing it as “an effervescent, hook-filled record that flirts with weighty emotions… every ounce of sunshine is tempered by grit”.

The project marked the first time Wolf has had the resources to outsource the more technical elements of the production process, as well as access to high quality equipment; an adjustment for a self-proclaimed DIY artist.

Her euphoric live set is an experience to behold, the 26-year-old talking candidly about mental health, sobriety, social anxiety and more, but turning it into a celebration and exuding absolute star power.

Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this dynamic performer when she lights up theatres across Australia and New Zealand in the New Year!

“We’re really glad to be heading back to Australia. A truly great nation with audiences who’ve been supporting us since we first toured the country in 1989” – Craig & Charlie Reid, The Proclaimers

Twins Craig and Charlie Reid and their superb four-piece band will perform all their big hits including ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’, ‘I’m On My Way’, ‘Sunshine on Leith’, ‘Letter From America’ and favourites from across their entire career including songs from new album Dentures Out. September 2022 saw The Proclaimers release their 12th studio album Dentures Out, recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales with producer Dave Eringa. James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers guests on two songs.

Kicking off a 14-month World tour with a main stage appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival in June, followed by a series of summer festivals and regional concerts, The Proclaimers have nearly sold out all 35 dates on their upcoming UK and Ireland tour between October and December.

Strikingly individual, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid emerged 31 years ago with their debut album This Is The Story and Top 3 single ‘Letter From America’. Since then, their enduring appeal across generations has, over the years, seen them enjoy huge success across the globe.

The Proclaimers have carved out a niche for themselves in the netherworld where pop, folk, new wave and punk collide. Their songs are timeless, capturing a gamut of human emotions, written with poignancy, emotional honesty, political fire and wit. Their songs feature at weddings, funerals and everything in-between.

Born in Leith in 1962, the brothers grew up in Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Auchtermuchty in Fife. At home, they listened to early rock n’ roll and country greats such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. At school, they played in punk bands and formed The Proclaimers in 1983. With a fervent live following growing in Scotland, their first big break came in 1986 when they were invited to tour with The Housemartins.

In subsequent years, they have enjoyed Gold and Platinum singles and albums in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They have even inspired a musical, the play and film Sunshine on Leith.

Stella Donnelly announces ‘Flood’ Australian Tour

Stella Donnelly is taking her critically acclaimed, superb sophomore album Flood on the road, performing a national run of shows early next year.

The award-winning Australian artist is fresh off the back of a global world tour including shows supporting Mitski, festival performances at Primavera, Splendour In The Grass and sold-out shows across the UK, Europe & North America. She eagerly returns home to perform her new album for Australian fans in 2023.

Following a slew of singles (‘Proof’ with Methyl Ethel, ‘Lungs’ & ‘Flood’), Donnelly released her highly anticipated and critically acclaimed sophomore record Flood in August 2022. Flood is Donnelly’s record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around. Flood affirms Donnelly as one of Australia’s most outstanding young songwriters.

The album was written in a multitude of unique locations around Australia, from her home in Fremantle to the rainforests of Bellingen, Williams, Guilderton, Margaret River and Melbourne. With new locations came new approaches; Donnelly strayed from writing on an electric guitar, as she had in the past, and instead moved to the piano, imbuing her new work with fluidity, introspection and vulnerability that underpins the album. With her dry wit, disarming vocals and endearing charm, Donnelly’s live show is the kind of performance you’ll never forget. Joining her on tour is up-and-coming Perth artist Mia June who makes dreamlike, punchy indie-rock drawing inspiration from the likes of Mitski and Julia Jacklin

George Thorogood @ Forum Theatre, MELBOURNE 28/10/2022

When you’ve been on the road for 50 years there’s sure to be generations of fans, and the snaking line of punters down Flinders St waiting to get into the Forum was a testament to the appeal George Thorogood and the Destroyers have had over the decades.

That eagerness to get into the sold-out venue and plant feet with a cold drink was rewarded with Aussie blues guitarist Hamish Anderson set the tone with some groovin’ blues.

His three-piece band’s 45-minute set was enough to whet the appetite of the full house and gathered new fans along the way.

But everyone was waiting for George, and Barry McGuire’s Eve Of Destruction was cranked up and started a sing along to bring out the band.

The aging blues star and his bandmates shuffled rather than leapt on to stage, and there was an early moment where one could be justified in thinking the old fella, wearing aviators and a bandana, might need a chair.

It was a few minutes into Rock Party before the sunglasses were flung overhead and the bandana was flicked off, and he let his fingers do the heavy lifting with his trademark blues and frequent banter.

He ripped into the band’s latest release, a cover of Bo Diddley’s Who Do You Love?, followed by Shot Down and Night Time.

The Destroyers pay homage to drinking and youthful rebelliousness, which at times seemed comedic seeing they’re all aged either side of 70, but it was lapped by an audience clearly reliving their party days.

From House Rent Blues they slid into One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. Fortunately, the classic was finished before what was supposed to be a jam, while George took a break off stage, but was muffled as a sound glitch left the band jamming away oblivious to the fault.

With that finally fixed, the band were back at it and the house were all shouting Get A Haircut.

Born To Be Bad was always going to be the highlight and the band stretched out this classic before slipping into a Tequila.

Hamish Anderson joined the band on stage for Hank Williams’ Move It On Over, which was a guitar love-in before they all left stage.

The band re-emerged to ice the night with Born To Be Bad and farewell a satisfied audience.

Oddly the curtains drew with Advance Australia Fair and George saluting the crowd.

The Destroyers were back at the Forum the next night for another sell-out, which is testament the band’s longevity and fan base here.

For a wet and miserable Melbourne night, some grooving dirty blues was perfect.
