ABOUT SOMEWHERE FAR BEYOND REVISITED

Right on time with their show at 2024’s edition of Wacken Open Air, BLIND GUARDIAN release of Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited, which includes a complete re-recording of this classic as well as a live celebration of 1992’s Somewhere Far Beyond, a landmark record for Germany’s heavy metal titans. After three albums on No Remorse Records, it was the band’s major label debut via Virgin Records and opened threm doors to the Japanese market resulting in a wider availability and presence on the global metal scene. After finding the right balance of speed, heaviness, melodies, drama and irresistible choruses on 1990’s Tales From The Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond honed this approach to perfection, evolving further on a conceptual level and increasing BLIND GUARDIAN’s sonic range. On Somewhere Far Beyond the band experimented with keyboards, orchestrations, and folk elements, the latter manifesting in the group’s best-known song and live staple, ‘The Bard’s Song (In The Forest)’, whereas other tracks like ‘Ashes to Ashes’, the rapid ‘Journey Through The Dark’ or ‘The Quest For Tanelorn’ connected well with previous mostly fast-paced albums yet offered an additional push in dynamics.

Fast forward 30 years! Prior to releasing the much lauded opus The God Machine in September 2022, BLIND GUARDIAN had been performing Somewhere Far Beyond in its entirety at Rock Hard Festival and Hellfest in Summer 2022 in front of tens of thousands of fans singing along to each track. Both shows were filmed and recorded professionally and aired via WDR and ARTE. For the limited triple-disc-edition of Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited the Hellfest material was newly edited by the band’s long-time videographer Dirk Behlau using additional multi-cam footage. The idea of re-recording the album originated from the rehearsals for these shows as Hansi Kürsch explains in the detailed liner notes: “The original idea wasn’t to do a re-recording. When rehearsing for the anniversary gigs, corona hit and we couldn’t be certain that those shows would take place. We still wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the album and if we wouldn’t be able to include a live version, we initially thought we could at least record the rehearsals.” Not 100% satisfied with those rough versions, BLIND GUARDIAN decided to go all in, knowing the risk of being frowned upon by fans who consider re-recordings utter blasphemy. “We tried to recapture what we did in 1992 but compensate youth with skilful experience, though in a hungry way. We never discussed any major changes but with over 30 years of experience, and our current line-up, those ingredients already add a new flavour to it.

With the basic tracks recorded in a live setting, Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited is leaner and more focused on impact in terms of guitar arrangements yet retains all the harmonies and melodies essential to the original. “We finally ended up with this cool hybrid version”, André adds. “We combined how we play the songs today, but at the same time, really tried to retain that speed metal spirit of the early 90s!

OPETH Announces New Album, THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT Shares First Single ‘§1’

The Last Will & Testament is due on October 11, 2024

via Reigning Phoenix Music

Listen “§1” HERE

Pre-Order THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT: HERE

Swedish prog legends OPETH are now pleased to reveal that their 14th studio album, ‘The Last Will & Testament’, is set for release on October 11, 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music! In celebration, the band is now sharing the first single from the offering, “§1” available on all DSPs Here. Prior to today’s worldwide announcement, the album was teased yesterday, exclusively for attendees at Wacken Open Air 2024 in conjunction with the band’s performance at the illustrious festival.

Opeth vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt admits: “I love this record. I have to say it (write it). Maybe I’m proud even? There are some familiar ingredients in there I suppose. Most of our music has sprung from the same source, so I guess it’s not much of a shocker if it’s going to sound like ‘us’. I’m a bit in awe of what we did with “The Last Will and Testament”. It feels like a dream. There is some ‘coherence’ and ‘songwriting skills’ I hope, but what do I know? I tend to favour the ‘strange’ over the ‘obvious,’ but I feel like I’m in the minority, and that’s fine. So…fair warning! Don’t expect an instant rush (as per usual), but if you do “get it” (have you got it yet?) right away, that’s ok too!”

‘The Last Will & Testament’ is a concept album set in the post-World War I era, unfolding the story of a wealthy, conservative patriarch whose last will and testament reveals shocking family secrets. The narrative weaves through the patriarch’s confessions, the reactions of his twin children, and the mysterious presence of a polio-ridden girl who the family have taken care of. The album begins with the reading of the father’s will in his mansion. Among those in attendance is a young girl, who, despite being an orphan and polio-ridden, has been raised by the family. Her presence at the will reading raises suspicions and questions among the twins.

Regarding the record’s creation, Åkerfeldt adds: “This is the first record with Walt on drums. Seeing and hearing him record his bits was otherworldly and what went through my head was something like: How can a human being play this stuff? The older cats (myself, Mendez, Fred and Jocke) did our bits in due time. We did them well (I like to think) and the alcohol concentration in our blood was mostly quite low as the red light was on. We’re professionals, you see! Rockfield Studios treated us well and we love that place! Stefan Boman recorded and mixed it all (CAPTURED it on TAPE… kind of…). Miles Showell did the master at Abbey Road Studios and then we (myself and Stefan) took him for a curry in Covent Garden. Travis Smith has done this odd-masterpiece-artwork that put ‘clothes’ on the music. All in all, we hope we’ve put together a nice little morsel of information for you to nibble on when it’s raining out. Thank you for your time. Thank you for reading. Thank you for listening. Thank you for giving us a respectable past. I’ll thank you for our future in the actual future, OK?”

Pre-Order ‘The Last Will & Testament’: HERE

Opeth’s fourteenth album was written by Åkerfeldt, with lyrics conferred with Klara Rönnqvist Fors (The Heard, ex-Crucified Barbara). ‘The Last Will & Testament’ was co-produced by Åkerfeldt and Stefan Boman (Ghost, The Hellacopters), engineered by Boman, Joe Jones (Killing Joke, Robert Plant), and Opeth, with Boman, Åkerfeldt, and the rest of Opeth mixing at Atlantis and Hammerthorpe Studios in Stockholm. The strings on ‘The Last Will & Testament’ were arranged by Åkerfeldt and returning prog friend Dave Stewart (Egg, Khan) and conducted by Stewart at Angel Studios in London. Not one to miss a beat, visual artist Travis Smith returns to the fold, crafting his 11th cover, a haunting “photograph” reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s infamous “Overlook Hotel” photograph. Miles Showell (ABBA, Queen) also revisits mastering and vinyl lacquer cutting at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Åkerfeldt rolls out the red carpet for storied flautist and Jethro Tull main man Ian Anderson. Not only do Anderson’s signature notes fly on “§4” and “§7”, he narrates on “§1”, “§2”, “§4”, and “§7”. Joining Anderson, Europe’s Joey Tempest lends a backing vocal hand on “§2”, while Åkerfeldt’s youngest daughter, Mirjam Åkerfeldt, is the disembodied voice in “§1”.

‘The Last Will & Testament ‘is gripping from start to finish, jaw-dropping inside and out, representing some of Opeth’s finest material to date. Just as Opeth welcomed many into its distressed arms over the years, the Swedes again deliver on the promise that great music always tells a compelling story—this time with growls.

Goatzilla – Queensland Rock Beasts Unleash New Single, Secret Agent Man. New Album Coming August 16!

Goatzilla emerged from the Gold Coast underground scene in 2015, giving Punk, Thrash and Heavy Metal a cheeky twist on the nipples and making crowds scream for more.

After recently signing with XMusic, they dropped the high octane, Alien Nation on the world and caused a major stir. Check out the lyric video for that here

No sooner has everyone recovered from that,, along comes Secret Agent Man to rattle your bones! This is the second single from the bands forthcoming album, Alien Nation which will be released on August 16.

It’s another track that will get you hooked and ready for action!

Listen to Secret Agent Man here

The video is ready for your enjoyment too!
https://youtu.be/2ACfOThr9x4?si=cx3DW9dAE6R_3tH7

Frontman Ben Zilla comments “Secret Agent Man” grew from the band’s love of cheesy spy and action movies – James Bond, Mission Impossible, Austin Powers, The Man From Uncle – anything with fast cars, guns, and a plot to destroy the planet from an underground bunker built in a dormant volcano. A funky main riff drives the track, accompanied by gunshots, explosions, and, as always, a trademark killer Goatzilla guitar solo!

Goatzilla is fronted by Bassist Ben Zilla. With their Motorhead-infused riffs and vocals, the band deliver songs that range from straight down the line rock to quirky punk headbangers, and occasionally delving into darker or downright bizarre territory. Guitarists Pete Beardsley (P1) and Pete Janssen (P2) take turns delivering face-melting solos over some serious bone-crunching riffage, while Brazilian drumming guru Thiago Castro delivers a mesmerising blend of rock, metal and latin infused rhythms guaranteed to get hair flying and horns raised!

Whats not to love?

Alien Nation will be released on August 16 via XMusic

The Offspring Release Juggernaut New Single ‘Light It Up’ From New Album ‘SUPERCHARGED’ Out October 11

PUNK ROCK ROYALTY THE OFFSPRING
RELEASE JUGGERNAUT NEW SINGLE LIGHT IT UP

YOU’RE GONNA GO FAR, KID JOINS COVETED SPOTIFY BILLIONS CLUB WITH 1 BILLION STREAMS

NEW ALBUM: SUPERCHARGED OUT OCTOBER 11

Going full speed into summer, The Offspring have released another killer track off of their highly anticipated new album SUPERCHARGED,out October 11 via Concord Records, aptly named Light It Up.

LISTEN TO LIGHT IT UP HERE

On the new track Dexter Holland commented: “This song is a full speed ahead juggernaut!

This character in the song is fed up, he’s had enough, and he’s gonna light it up. He’s ready for a fight. And I definitely sense a lot of that around me. Growing up, some of my favorite songs were by punk bands that were just like, “I’m sick of your shit.” And that was ok! It wasn’t like a negative thing to have those feelings and express that. And I think that’s kind of the vibe of where “Light It Up” is: You’re fed up, you’ve had it and you want to do something about it. That’s one of things I’ve always loved about punk rock. It’s always been about letting out your aggressions, and I think that’s still true. I still love writing songs like that.” – Dexter Holland

The song follows their first release off of the albumMake It All Right which is currently Top 10 on the Billboard Alternative and Mainstream Rock Charts and climbing. Last week the band released the animated music video for the track, directed by Margaret Bialis, and featured an animated punk rocker dreaming of his “partner in crime.” During the video their love sprouts wings and takes them on adventures and across the skies. The song comes right out of the gates hot in legendary Offspring fashion-but lyrically talks about how it feels to have your “partner in crime” by your side. The person who makes you feel like you can do anything and give you confidence things will work out: “And you make it all right, And it’s gonna be fine, We’re like partners in crime, And you make it all right.”

Adding to their many accolades, the band’s classic hit You’re Gonna Go Far, Kidoff of their 2008 Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace album has been added to Spotify’s Billions Club this week after the song reached one billion streams on the platform. Prior to this You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid, had already been certified Platinum in the United States, United Kingdom and Gold in Spain, Poland, Italy, Germany, and Denmark. Upon release song hit #1 on the Alternative Airplay Chart (formerly the Hot Modern Rock Tracks Chart) and remained at the top spot for 11 weeks- making it the longest #1 of any of the band’s singles. The Billions Club, which first launched in 2020, lists all of the songs that have reached one Billion streams on Spotify. The Offspring’s infamous song has now joined the list which features songs from peers and icons including AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Whitney Houston, The Killers and more.

The Offspring have had a lot of time with their music industry peers and last week released two official performance videos with a legendary guest star- Queen’s own Brian May who joined at Starmus Festival not only for a performance of their own songGone Away but a cover of Queen’s Stone Cold Crazy.

Watch Gone AwayHERE & Stone Cold CrazyHERE

For the special performance The Offspring started a beautiful orchestral version, joined by The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Stuart Morley, of their 1997 hitGone Away with Dexter Holland singing solo. Audience members were thrilled when halfway through the song the rest of The Offspring AND Queen’s Brian May joined the stage. In classic May fashion, he added some stellar guitar licks to the song, which only further added to the incredible rendition.

Thrilled with the performance, Dexter remarked, “Brian so nice of you to join us! So nice of you to hop in on this one! Thank you, Thank you, What a treat!” Directly following, Dexter intro’d the next track saying: “As long as we are all here, wanna play a queen song maybe?” before they all launched into a killer rendition of Stone Cold Crazy with May on guitar.

All of this after the band and Ed Sheeran broke the internet after they performed to a massive crowd at Napa’s BottleRock Festival. Sheeran- who is a longtime fan of The Offspring – surprised the crowd and performed Million Miles Away from the band’s Conspiracy of One album (released in 2000). See performance HERE and Sheeran’s post on the iconic performance HERE.

Continuing on the road, the band are performing overseas at numerous festivals as well as Louder Than Life Festival on September 26 and more in North America.

OCEANS Announce New Album HAPPY + Release New Single ‘Parasite’

Exciting news from German nu-death band OCEANS!

After the band’s triptych of EPs in 2022, that later formed the album Hell Is Where The Heart Is, the band now announces their third official studio album. HAPPY, which will be released on September 27th, sees the band delving into the all too familiar topic of mental health struggles as they explore the lows of the human existence, with the albums title serving as desired state of mind.

OCEANS have also delivered a brand-new single called ‘Parasite’, which comes with an accompanying music video.

Timo Rotten comments:

“Music has always been our way of confronting our darkest emotions and finding a sense of release. I hope that this song resonates with those who have faced anxiety and depression and reminds them that they are not alone. Your fear might hold you hostage. But you can also choose to fight back!”

About OCEANS:

Germany’s Nu Death powerhouse OCEANS are back with unprecedented ferocity since their debut EP in 2018. Brace yourself for their third album HAPPY, a colossal juggernaut that once again showcases the band’s ability to seamlessly fuse Nu Metal, Death Metal and Post Rock into their own signature sound. The days of subtle introversion seem to be over. As the world faces one crisis after another, OCEANS are channeling their frustration at the state of the world into a bold statement against the influence of social media on society, while staying true to their mission of promoting mental health awareness. This band has never sounded as angry as they do now, and these 11 songs are impressive proof of how well that emotion suits them. Surely this is also what convinced Australia’s finest, keyboardist MISSTIQ and Josh Collard from EARTH CALLER, to take part as feature artists on two tracks. OCEANS ’previous album Hell Is Where The Heart Is put the band on the road with international acts like BLIND CHANNEL in 2022, as well as supporting ANNISOKAY in 2024. It’s safe to say that HAPPY will ignite massive mosh pits on their upcoming extensive European tour with SEPTICFLESH in October 2024.

OCEANS is:
Timo Rotten | vocals, guitar
Patrick Zarske | guitar
Thomas Winkelmann | bass
J.F. Grill | drums

DIESEL ANNOUNCES ‘BOOTLEG MELANCHOLY ALBUM TOUR 2024’ + SHARES NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘REMEMBER MY LOVE’

Following the acclaimed release of his seventeenth studio album Bootleg Melancholy late last year, Australian icon Diesel is proud to today announce a national headline run to close out 2024, hitting the road with a full band for the Bootleg Melancholy Album Tour, presented by New World Artists. And accompanying Diesel’s tour excitement is the addition of a brand new music video for Remember My Love, aka the modern swoon closing out 2023’s Bootleg Melancholy.

Commencing a 13-date national run on Saturday 31 August in Adelaide, Diesel’s Bootleg Melancholy Album Tour will also journey through Melbourne, Warragul, Hobart, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Batemans Bay, Canberra, Perth and Darwin, with proceedings drawing to a close on Friday 13 December in Caloundra. Pre-sale tickets for the Bootleg Melancholy Album Tour 2024 will be available from 12pm AEST on Thursday 11 July, with general tickets on sale from 12pm AEST on Monday 15 July. To keep up to date with all things Diesel, including upcoming tour pre-sale opportunities, head to dieselmusic.com.au/mailinglist.

An exuberant and multi-faceted collection of 14 tracks, Bootleg Melancholy coalesces the myriad of talents wielded by Diesel, aka the prolific American-born and Aussie-based roots/rock guitarist and vocalist Mark Lizotte. Loaded with hooks, honeyed vocals, and a range of stylistic hues, Bootleg Melancholy’s songs greet with the warmth and familiarity of a good friend, with songs about family, mortality, childhood, and dreams. Travelling across time, place, and memory, this is rousing yet reflective pop music that celebrates the joys of everyday life while braving the difficult stuff – the challenges we all eventually face – with insights and tenderness; a fact witnessed vividly on the album’s closing track Remember My Love. “The song is about not forgetting that there are others around us who are experiencing the same human condition and not to get stuck in a moment,” shares Diesel of Remember My Love. “In part, I’m speaking to myself; a reminder that one must be at peace to some degree to be able to give solace to others. It’s also a mantra that in times of despair I’ve tapped into, just the idea of being loved can snap me out of spiralling down.”

As with the broader album’s output, Remember My Love was tracked by Diesel on his own, later bringing in Lee Moloney on drums (“to add some more weight”, as Diesel puts it). Starting with an 808 drum pattern heard in its verses, Remember My Love grew continuously over the space of a few days, resulting in the eerie yet bright track ultimately heard on the album that is also brought to stunning life today via its accompanying music video. “The music video for Remember My Love was shot by my daughter Lily Lizotte and edited by Blake Fraser, who worked on the multi-award-winning Patricia Moore series,” shares Diesel. “For the video, I thought it would be a good fit to return to where I remember writing most of the song, which is down by the nearby ports where I spend a lot of time decompressing. With a wide open horizon leading west, the sunsets are always vivid.”

Recently showcasing his enigmatic live show as part of his solo Forever Tour, including a sold out performance at the Sydney Opera House, Diesel’s upcoming performances in the latter half of 2024 will feature a three-piece band along with a celebration of the talented artist’s abundant back catalogue – including, of course, the tour’s titular release Bootleg Melancholy. “17 albums in, I’m probably not second guessing as much about the process,” shares Diesel. “My experiences working with other artists collaborating has really rubbed off on what I make too. I’ve had a lot of really positive feedback from people on this record, especially after making and releasing 2 albums during the pandemic, it’s affirming to get peoples reaction first-hand in real life!”

“Having so much material to draw from is a nice problem,” Diesel adds. “My band have been good at reminding me of songs and albums that I may have neglected for no particular reason. Having a new piece of the puzzle in Bootleg Melancholy will help shape the set. I can already see songs from other albums “putting up their hands” to be in the set, as I’ve found new songs will evoke feelings and parallel lines to older songs. We make quite a bit of sound it’s been said for a three-piece band and these shows coming up won’t be an exception, I really enjoy the juxtapose of playing band shows, and the same could be said for solo shows, I’m pretty blessed to have both!”

One of Australia’s greatest success stories, the American-born Diesel, aka Mark Lizotte, has spent three decades weaving his one-of-a-kind musical magic into his rock and blues-fuelled sounds, both as part of the band Johnny Diesel & The Injectors and, more recently, as a solo artist. With multiple #1 ARIA charting albums under his belt, six ARIA award wins and millions of streams alongside a legion of fans, Diesel’s creative skillset also expands beyond his own projects, with the talented artist also renowned for his work as a producer and multi-instrumentalist. And good news for Diesel fans and music lovers in general out there – the man himself is primed for some exciting upcoming creative endeavours alongside his impending tour, as he concludes, “It’s pretty normal for me to start writing another body of songs and start the recording process for another album, and I’ve been doing just that, in between shooting eps for an upcoming TV series where I get to interview music artists and shine a light on concerts and the stories behind them. Tell us about your new single Sideswiped?

‘Sideswiped’ is a fictional story about those days (we all have) when literally everything goes wrong! I first penned the song as a young bloke, then circled back many years later, and lathered in a whole lot more drama. I love story telling so it was a fun one to write.

What’s the creative process like for you?

Like most writers. It’s far from linear. Ideas can come from anywhere, at any time, fully formed or as fragments that have to be crafted. I love the quick songs, but I also love crafting things over time, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way.

If you could change something about the music industry what would change?

The low commercial value the industry and streaming platforms has placed on artists and artistry is awful, and unsustainable for most. If I could change something it would be to restore the real value of a great song, well played.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music/visual art as an outlet?

Grey, one dimensional, frustrating, dull!

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?

I like Andrew Swift, I think he’s doing great work and would love to collaborate with him some day, my dream collab would be Chris Stapelton, for his effortless and timeless melodies and lyrics

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry ?

Be determined, never let others deter you and work harder than everyone else.

What’s your favourite song to perform?

Sideswiped! Feels like it gets everyone up.

Got any secret hobbies that we might be surprised by?

I collect hats, and I have a fetish for speakers.
