Dark Sunglasses is the latest single from country rock singer/songwriter, Kristy James, and the first track lifted from her forthcoming EP set for release mid-year through indie record label, Social Family Records. Released to radio earlier this week, the music video solidifies the story behind the track.
A haunting and catchy song, Dark Sunglasses was produced by Kristy and her partner, Luke Davis, at their home studio, The Avenue Recording Studio. It’s a story about adultery and murder that can be spawned from being cheated on and disrespected.
“Most of the time when I write songs I write from real experiences, but when I sat at my piano with my guitar ready to write for the day, I removed my watch, took off my jacket and put my sunglasses on the desk…and in an instant I looked at the sunglasses and thought ‘what a cool title’ and Dark Sunglasses was born.” – Kristy James
Filmed and directed by Jesse Anderson of Klik Productions, the music video brings Dark Sunglasses to life on screen.
Kristy James is a multi award-winning singer/songwriter from Newcastle and has been in the music industry for the majority of her life. Kristy’s first EP achieved a #2 spot on the iTunes chart and her first single Overdrive was included on three compilation albums. Kristy followed this up with a further two iTunes #2 Singles.
In 2016 Kristy was named a Top 5 finalist in the Musicoz Australian Independent Music country section and in the same year won the 2016 Australian Songwriters Association Awards – the country’s largest and longest running competition. To add to her achievements, Kristy was also awarded the PPCA (Phonographic Performance Company Of Australia) Best Live Performance Award of 2016. Last year, Kristy yet again won the Country section of the 2017 Australian Songwriters Association Awards with her original song Take Me Down, and followed that by winning the 2017 PPCA Best Live Performance Award once again.
With 2018 looking bigger and brighter than ever, Kristy will embark on an Australia wide tour including four launch shows for her EP, leaving the next twelve months looking extremely promising.
Multi-instrumentalists and talented duo, NeillyRich, have signed a licensing deal for their 2018 release with independent record label, Social Family Records, also taking over distribution of their current EP, Here Now Forever. They’re the latest to join a burgeoning roster of artists, which includes 2018 Golden Guitar finalists, Gretta Ziller and songwriting legend, Matt Scullion, multi award-winning, Jetty Road, as well as Jason Owen, Andrew Swift, Hayley Jensen, The Buckleys, and Kristy James.
“Matt and I are thrilled to get this opportunity. As a young artist you dream of securing a record deal. After releasing our last record on a distribution deal, we are over the moon that we now have the full support of a label behind us to help raise the bar. Now we just need to get writing and create some killer songs for the next release!” – Amelia Richards, NeillyRich
It was 2012 when two paths converged and New Zealand born Matthew McNeilly met Kempsey girl, Amelia Richards in Tamworth. Their musical passions aligned at the CMAA Academy, resulting in the formation of the contemporary country music duo NeillyRich.
With diverse musical inspirations from Lyall Lovett through to Keith Urban, Matthew and Amelia, both dedicated songwriters, combine to form a unique flavour of country music grounded in tradition, but embracing a polished, modern, Nashville-styled sound. Hailing from the birthplace of the iconic Slim Dusty, Amelia has always had a focused approach to storytelling through music in the vein of some of the pioneers of the Australian industry.
To Matt and Amelia, authenticity and musicianship are the most important facets of their performance. They practice tirelessly and are always aspiring to be better at what they do. Both can carry a song on lead vocals with ease, but it is the long-studied harmonies that make this duo a stand out. As well as singing the duo play a range of instruments. Amelia plays rhythm guitar and mandolin, while Matt is often referred to as a “gun” guitar player from fans who witness his prowess. He also plays drums, bass and harmonica to round out this act’s almost-complete musical range. Their capabilities as musicians have already been acknowledged by Tomkins Guitars who offered the pair endorsement in 2015.
Since then, the partnership between these two emerging artists has resulted in the release of numerous singles and their 7-track EP, Here Now Forever, which reached number four on both the ARIA Australian Country Album Chart as well as the iTunes Australian Country Album Chart.
Multi award-winning Melbourne-based trio, Jetty Road, have become the latest country stars to ink a licensing deal with independent record label, Social Family Records, who will also take over distribution of their current album, Hearts On Fire, whilst the band prepares to write and record their next record. They join a strong current roster of artists, including 2018 Golden Guitar finalists, Gretta Ziller and songwriting legend, Matt Scullion, as well as Jason Owen, Andrew Swift, Hayley Jensen, The Buckleys, and Kristy James.
“We’re thrilled to be joining the team at Social Family Records. We believe they will be a great fit for us musically; we’re very excited for what lies ahead.” – Jetty Road
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Paula, Lee and Julian in the past, so I’m excited to have that opportunity again. The three of them are wonderful musicians and awesome people – it’ll be a pleasure to support them on their journey as they get back into the studio for what is sure to be another excellent release from Jetty Road.” – Nardia Drayton, Label Manager, Social Family Records
Paula and Lee Bowman (identical twins) and Julian Sammut are Jetty Road. They have a sound described as a tapestry of pop and country, with a hint of folk. Imagine The Corrs, Fleetwood Mac and The Dixie Chicks all rolled into one with a unique Australian flavour.
January 2018 marks their 13-year anniversary together and it’s easy to see the progression from their humble beginnings at Australia’s Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2005, busking on Tamworth’s famous Peel Street through to winning Golden Guitar Awards.
Over the years, they’ve travelled the world doing Australia proud during numerous international tours and major North American festival appearances, playing main stage performances at festival giants Big Valley Jamboree (Canada), WE Fest (US), Havelock Jamboree (Canada), Merritt Mountain CM Festival (Canada), plus Norway and Switzerland’s famous Vinstra and Trucker & Country Festivals. They have played alongside the cream of country music including Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Vince Gill, Gretchen Wilson, Dwight Yoakam and Glen Campbell.
The trio has received a multitude of awards and accolades along the way, taking home two Golden Guitars (and receiving multiple nominations), an APRA Award nomination, five Southern Star Independent Artist of Australia Awards and a stack of number one charting country songs to their name.
Gretta Ziller has been announced as a finalist for the 2018 Golden Guitar Awards for her brilliant debut album, Queen of Boomtown, nominated for Alt Country Album of the Year, alongside Brad Butcher, Fanny Lumsden, Kasey Chambers, and Shane Nicholson.
The full-length debut album from Gretta Ziller, Queen of Boomtown, released through independent record label, Social Family Records, was recorded at Woodstock Studios, Balaclava, and produced by New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Paul Ruske. Ziller brought together an impressive array of musicians to perform on the acclaimed album, the recordings featuring members of Saskwatch, The Cat Empire, and the bands of Angus & Julia Stone, Passenger and Dan Sultan, a duet with Henry Wagons, and accomplished songwriter Jen Mize providing backing vocals.
“I wanted to make an album that I’d still be proud of in 20 years time…it being my first album I was not expecting a nomination in the Golden Guitars at all! I’m honoured and I’m proud of Queen of Boomtown and I’m over the moon to be nominated for Alt Country Album of the Year!!” – Gretta Ziller
Ziller is preparing to head out on the road with Andrew Swift for the Great Australian Caravan Park Country Music Showcase, taking in 22 caravan parks in 22 days, before hitting Tamworth Country Music Festival for a number of performances, including the Opening Concert.
4 out of 5 stars – Rolling Stone Magazine
“…even when she’s on the floor of ‘the bathroom of regret’, Ziller offers a poeticism that lifts the album into the realms of soulful refection…” – Jessie Cunniffe (Rolling Stone)
“She possesses an emotive tone that can soar like a country diva, holler like a blues singer and serenade with the sweetness of a soul temptress, making Queen of Boomtown a world class Americana debut.” – Chris Familton (Rhythms)
Following their award-winning lead-foot muscle car banger Ride Home, The Lockhearts have announced the pending release of their new single Goddamn Pretty from forthcoming album, Americana Doom Fuzz (slated for release in early 2018), with the band currently gearing up for an east coast Australian tour with a run of dates through November and December.
An instantly infectious down-home groove, Goddamn Pretty is due to drop on Monday, 30 October (available for pre-order via iTunes as of Friday, 13th). It showcases the “Americana” side of the bands’ forthcoming record, gliding in with a laid-back swagger and bursts of rich vocal harmony in the choruses reminiscent of the Eagles or Tom Petty.
Formed in 2012, drawing from the members’ shared love of Joe Perry’s line of hot experimental hot sauces and classic Aerosmith, The Lockhearts hold claim to the longest running weekly residency in Sydney, the worst chilli vodka ever made, have toured Australia extensively, and created their own annual sell-out festival “Old Mates Block Party”. Goddamn Pretty gets into the roots of the bands’ Americana influences, delivering a lush taste of what’s to come from their debut LP.
The Lockhearts are fronted by Tim Meaco on vocals and guitar, Sam Sheumack on guitar, Jameel Majam on bass and Steve ‘Woodie’ Woodward on drums.

The four-headed Irish-Australian outfit hailing from Sydney’s Inner West, also known as Flickertail (formerly The Bitter Sweethearts), have released their new single, Talk, the first track lifted from their forthcoming EP, Hurry Up and Wait, slated for release in early 2018, with shows scheduled for Sydney, Canberra, Bendigo and Dubbo.
Talk is a lovely little blended smoothie of every ingredient that defines and differentiates Flickertail, with the delicate, lilting melody in the intro giving way to obstreperous guitars and thunderous drums. It’s like ABBA via Thin Lizzy, dusted with a bit of Biffy Clyro and mountainous spades of Oasis – Talk is rock and roll played the way it ought to be: brash, honest, equal parts vulnerable and impenetrable. It’s a track about loving someone who can’t love themselves and hoping your love is enough to stop them doing the unthinkable.
Flickertail honed their sound in the garages and booze dens of Sydney before hitting the road in 2015 to showcase their unique sound at every pub, club and backyard along Australia’s eastern coast. The end of that year saw the band landing coveted opening slots with Aussie rock heroes Buffalo and Sarah McLeod on top of endless sweaty shows with local legends Black Aces, The Lockhearts, and Foreign Kings. 2016 had them taking their infamous zero-bullshit live show on the road once more, supporting the likes of The Casanovas and US juggernaut The Supersuckers.
In 2017 and 2018, armed with a record deal, their wits, guitars and their stunning good looks, Flickertail plan on conquering every state across this vast, thirsty continent. Hitting the pavement in October in support of their new single, Talk, a national tour is also planned for next year in line with the release of their upcoming EP, Hurry Up and Wait.
