[LIVE REVIEW] Uncanny X-Men @ Hamilton Hotel, Brisbane 13/09/2018

Much like comic nerds (including myself) look forward to superhero team-ups and reunions, Thursday night at the Hamilton Hotel fans and VIPs embraced the return of the Uncanny X-Men complete with the original line-up. The night’s media launch marked the start of the Coz Life Still Hurts tour where the band will play their original Coz Life Hurts album in its entirety, cover-to-cover so to speak. The tour will be in cities and regional towns all across Queensland and New South Wales over the next few months.

The launch party occupied the exclusive H Lounge and allowed the band to mingle and chat with all the fans and VIPs happily snapping selfies and signing autographs. It provided a fantastic opportunity for fans to get up close with the enigmatic band. We also got a chance to sit down and chat as you’ll see in our video interview.

A fantastic young band, To The Skies hailing from Sunshine Coast, performed as a support act. They entertained the launch guests greatly and it was easy to spot a few people dancing along. They served up a fun rocking entrée before the main course.

With a wrestling style MC announcement and drums overture, Uncanny X-Men bounced onto the stage with that air of energy they are renowned for opening with Still Waiting and Used To Know. Mannix thanked everyone for coming but “I don’t mean you… I mean the band!” Still keen with that trademark mischief, the chemistry between band members was awesome playing into Best Looking Guy and Party.

They may not have played together for a while, but that made little difference. The fact is they can still play, damn it. They still sound great.

Continuing with that humor, Mannix gave an alternate name to 50 Years calling it, “Where we will be next week?” All the fans having a laugh as they continued to dance and sing along, this is what Uncanny X-Men really is all about.

Performing hit Work made it not seem like work at all, effortless and playful. Joking about artists releasing new stuff lead into their recently released single, Take It From Me. In all honesty, radio stations and fans get onto it. The crowd enjoyed the set wanting to just get that little bit more, Uncanny X-Men obliging with Kicks, an excellent encore.

The band then returned to circulating on the floor joining in, to party the night away with fans and VIPs. As one of my favorite X-Men characters, Deadpool would say, “maximum effort!” I wouldn’t expect anything less from a true superhero band.

In 2018, they are older and wiser and the energy that is the X Men is still there!

As Molly Meldrum would say “Do yourself a favour”!
