If you like your wings saucy and just a little bit spicy then The Arrival is the album for you. Hot Wings is the brainchild of renowned Melbourne guitarist Lizzie Sedman. Add to this Rob McPherson also on guitar, Scott Cherry slappin’ the bass and drummer extraordinaire Julia Watt and you have the recipe for a flaming hot bucket of feathered flappers.
Released in 2016 The Arrival is terrifically well balanced with tunes that are catchy from the first note, with a surfer/swing/rock vibe reminiscent of The Shadows with plenty more zing. While there is the absence of vocals it is evident immediately that they aren’t required as the album carries itself perfectly well, bringing the focus straight to the music. I would class The Arrival as a perfect driving album, with music to suit all terrains from the opening track Afro Surf right to the closer El Rollo.
The Arrival is extremely well mixed and it is evident that much time and energy has gone into finding the perfect groove and sticking with it. The brass addition of the trumpet and trombone elevates this album to another level giving fantastic depth, once again highlighting the thought behind every song. The cover artwork is super cool and suits the feel and sound of the album perfectly.
If I have whet your appetite even slightly about this tight knit unit you will be delighted to know they are playing a Merry F****n Xmas gig at The Post Office Hotel in Coburg on Saturday. So if you need a venue for your Christmas party or are just looking a fun FREE night out with some of Melbourne’s finest musicians it all starts going down at 9pm on Saturday 23rd December, so be there or be square! – Cassandra Hale
