“When there’s nothing left to plunder
And their armour’s lost its sheen
Then the culture will remind them
We were all born kings and queens.”
As a musician, performer, DJ and social maverick, Joyride has entrenched himself as one of the biggest personalities in Australian music. His work with the One Day Crew and The Meeting Tree has seen him nominated for an ARIA and play some of the biggest events in the country – from major festivals like Splendour In The Grass to the immensely popular One Day Sunday block parties.
Today Joyride drops the new single and video, ‘Kings And Queens’, showcasing his immense talent, while capturing the sentiment of people like him he sees striving to live vibrant lives against a backdrop of bullsh*t – as ever-expanding cultural sink holes continue to form in the cities and towns we love. ‘Kings And Queens’ calls out the people that “run these cities”, putting them on notice and exclaiming that we in the next generation are ready to raze the joint to the ground to remind them that no matter what, we will become the kings and queens of our domain.
“I wrote this on a day where I was feeling particularly upset about how the powers that be are hamstringing our culture, vibrancy and diversity,” says Joyride. “F*ck them. A community derives its worth from the entire sum of itself, not just the self-appointed top tier. If you come for our happiness, why can’t we come for yours? I was particularly cross that day, I guess.”
The video was directed by the brilliant minds at Entropico and guest stars Joyride’s nieces alongside the big man, as he and his little companions paint his hometown of Sydney in pastel colours; expose corrupt, little-to-no-action figures; and eventually smash the iconic skyline to the smithereens.
Speaking about the video, Joyride says, “My neices are cute AF. I hope they can grow up in a city that trusts them to be the best versions of themselves. I’ll show them the video at their 21st birthdays and hope we can look back and laugh at how sh*t we were being treated by elected officials and CEOs because it seems like a faint and distant dream.”
‘Kings and Queens’ is Joyride’s first single release since signing with Dew Process / UMA and is taken from his long-awaited forthcoming debut album Sunrise Chaser, which is scheduled for release in early 2018.
‘Kings and Queens’ will be available HERE Friday, July 14.
