[LIVE REVIEW] Crystal Ignite @ The Workers Club, Fitzroy 06/05/2017

Review Jodi Marino

Greatness is often spawned through adversity and this is most certainly the case for Crystal Ignite.

The former powerhouse front woman of hard rocking Melbourne born Bellusira, has faced more than her fair of obstacles throughout her life. All of which she has conquered with her fiercely positive attitude and a lot of hard work.

Her latest incarnation, being simply ‘Crystal Ignite’, is a testament to the ability to take all that is negative and turn it completely full circle. Having now signed a licensing deal with Sony/ATV, first debut solo single, Everything You Break, has just been released and has been very well received. Wither her trademark soaring notes and ferocious rock style, it is sure to become a favourite.

Returning from the USA late last year, and recording the single which features former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody, Crystal spent some much needed down time writing with a longtime friend and former Bellusira guitarist, Chris Zoupa.

With productivity being at a high, her newly formed band, including such talented musicians as Benny Clark, Brandon Valentine, Chris Miller and Chris Zoupa, have joined her for a short 11 date national run. Joining her is the female fronted outfit Acolyte, amongst other guests.

Saturday night saw the band perform at The Workers Club in Fitzroy, being supported by The Deadlips, Verona Lights and Acolyte.

By the time Acolyte finished their very impressive set, the room was jam packed and ready to see what the new and improved Crystal Ignite was going to unleash.

Starting out with a couple of Bellusira favorites, Cachango, was like a wake-up punch to the face! Hitting hard it was a familiar sound but felt like it was completely amped up several levels. Redemption Queen, from the last album together, The Healing, made it quite clear that the team of bandmates Crystal had hand-picked were a fantastic choice as they seemed to only sound amazing, but they gelled so well, giving the song a super heavy sound.

Crystal’s typical energetic stage presence has certainly not diminished, nor has her emotional, almost aggressive delivery.

New songs such as Ecstasy and Crown followed and were received well by the crowd. Delivering some more Bellusira songs including Culprit, which was one of their most successful songs, and an absolutely crunching rendition of Dance With Me, which sounded heavier and punchier than ever before.

The last three songs for the night were all fresh from the EP, with the newly released Everything You Break, followed by 45 and Snake.

It was clearly evident that Crystal Ignite was back, and with a drive and determination that oozed through her performance, making her more intense than previously seen.

So pleasing was it to see her completely on fire, and loving every minute.

Although the EP is yet to be titled, I would highly recommend keeping a keen eye out for what could very possibly be one of the best debut EP’s to come out this year.

Melbournians, you have another opportunity to catch them this Friday night,  the 12/5 at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave.
