Following up from their debut album release in July 2016, Spokane based Elephant Gun Riot have merely hours to wait until their new acoustic EP is released to the world and the respective global verdict is returned. I have been absorbing this EP intermittently over the past few days to wrestle back my mind and attempt an objective, balanced description. I did say attempt.
My issues of gleeful abandon and rational though blissfully cast to the four winds were prompted by first listen to this recording. The word organic resounded as I absorbed the superb offerings on this collection.
Starlight opens the doors to our journey and melodically takes you by the hand to gently guide your way. This track is beautifully written and contains more vocal and instrumental hooks than I care to count. Caitlin sounds so wonderfully soulful, genuine and beautifully appealing in accompaniment to the musical finery, that you will be struggling to combat the cerebral reverberation. And who would want to really?
Unleash has a brilliant air of foreboding and an inherent malevolence with every strum, beat and vocal utterance. But this is the very stage in proceedings that you realise you are in for a naked and raw demonstration of how diverse this tremendous outfit are.
Daydream is utterly superb as the music and lyrics aurally deliver your consciousness from real time to wistful contemplation and back via the complexity of this excellent work.
Burn strips you of all aforementioned mystical musing and immediately delivers us into a more melancholic mood, but in the most sensational manner. Musically, vocally and lyrically this track is nothing short of an amazing. But just as we seem to be closing to finale on a superbly elicited sombre disposition, Tonight brings balance and leads you back to your existence, fresh from a captivating dreamscape journey.
Elephant Gun Riot have been ingenious in their track selection and sequencing for this acoustic selection because it demonstrated their tremendous flare for diversity without compromise. To release an acoustic EP is for some groups a nice idea, for others defining achievement and for a few, a monumental faux pas, but rarely is a collection of a mere five tracks such a thrilling and emotive journey. Thank you, Elephant Gun Riot, for such a brief and fulfilling voyage.
