Well, all those waiting patiently for the second release from Devil You Know, strap yourself in for a mammoth ride of triumphant proportions.
Those familiar with vocalist Howard Jones (yes, this one, not that one) formerly of Killswitch Engage and Blood Has Been Shed, will be well and truly familiar with his tremendous presence and dexterity, but this is something very special indeed. His skill is apparently being further honed as years mature his abilities, like a fine wine.
Your hair is swept rearward instantly as Consume The Damned launches listeners into the collection at breakneck speed. John Sankey at the kit stamps his authority immediately as the opening track raises a sense of excitement and eager anticipation. If this is the opener, what is yet to come?
As we progress into The Way We Die a distinct envelopment in each instrument becomes apparent. The album has been mixed to stunning perfection with each instrument being crisp and clear. Ryan Wombacher comes to the fore with bass proficiently and you can clearly distinguish his work. I am pleased to report that this remains constant throughout the album. The clean vocals provided by Howard provide sections of this sensational track with attributes making it a clear frontrunner for the theme, dare I say title, for a new brand of Bond 007.
Francesco Artusato opens Your Last Breath beautifully and provides timely reminder of what a sensational guitarist he is. A slower track, yet some monumentally powerful and a regal celebration of the magnificence Howard provides in superlative vocal capability. Now play the track again and tune your ear to each contributors sound. You will be provided with a more thorough understanding of what a sensational group of individuals make up Devil You Know. They are a band of individually brilliant musicians, but together the sensational sound cloaks how really talented each member is. I can think of worse issues to have. Repeated runs of this album will provide more and more with each listen.
Shattered Silence is exactly that, in the most magnificent metal form you could possibly wish for and the settles into a true celebration of all the metal staples. Putting this track mid album is a master stroke making the listener eager for more. Brilliant.
Master Of None is thoroughly saturated with guitar brilliance from Francesco and a solo that has to be heard to be believed. But the astonishing thing is that as you reflect in aural bliss, the vocals, the bass and the drums are equally sensational. And to be brutally honest, that sums up the entire album.
Broken By The Cold is an exemplary track to complete the album because it honestly and genuinely, causes you to start the album all over again. Wailing winter winds sweep you past any intentions of putting this album back in the cover.
This collection of glorious works is an absolute must. However, additionally this will be an investment for developing bands. The return on that investment being a point of reference as to how superb a metal album can be with instrumental perfection, diversity and sheer quality, loaded with inspirational moments.
This album will knock your metaphorical socks off, but take of your shoes in case it becomes literal. It’s quite possible.
