Due for release on the 14th August 2015, via Nuclear Blast, Archangel is the best work yet from Soulfly and the Cavalera metal monarchy collectively.
The brilliant cover art by Eliran Kantor depicting Michael waging merciless war is paralleled only by the aural treats found within. Surely this cover is one reason we must all own in LP format to thoroughly enjoy. Note the spear and The Archangel Michaels wings shaped like the Soulfly tribal symbol and the ocean view from clifftop reminiscent of the 1998 debut album.
A multidimensional journey that is testament to the mastery of Soulfly and, more widely, the rarely in musical success which opens the doors of experimentation and allows a group to walk through, taking devotees along on a mystical journey of discovery, this time of biblical proportions. This rule however is not limited to Archangel because it is accompanied by tracks like Sodomites, the subject of which is the destruction of Sodom (guest appearance from Todd Jones of Nails). Similarly we enjoy reference to the Akkadian god of the sun in Shamash and reference to the Babylonian queen Ishtar. Bethlehem’s Blood really needs no explanation.
The opening track re-established the bond with followers and fans, making you feel as though you are part of the group and an integral component of their very existence. Taking up by the throat and heaving us this way and that with careless abandon, thrashing out the anthem of our camaraderie. And let’s face it, if you are going to sell your soul, what better recipient that the spirit of Metal. Namesake Archangel follows with similar ferocity, albeit with a slower opening giving us a chance to draw breath before Zyon Cavalera percussively pummels us into submission.
Live Life Hard is most aptly titled indeed and kicks the lyrical delivery into the realms of maniacal discourse. If ‘go hard or go home’ doesn’t deliver the message clearly, ‘go home or fuck off’ will certainly leave listeners with clear, and unmistakable instructions as to Soulfly’s expectations. I really can’t wait to see crowd reaction to the new tracks delivered live and loud. This track is particularly dear to our hearts at Silver Tiger Media as it features a guest appearance from our friend, and Australian countryman Matt Young of King Parrot, whose inclusion on this track, and album we are very proud of.
Titans is an instant Groove Metal classic containing all the essential elements whist dedicated to the war of the Titans, presumably centred around Thessaly and Titanomachy, the ten years of battle between the Titans and the Olympians.
Deceiver’s brilliant opening sucks you into a vortex and spits you into a parallel universe of swirling malevolent torment. Vicious, wrathful and unrelenting, presumably just like the archetypical deceiver himself.
Mother of Dragons completes the album beautifully, and the album would not be complete without a visit from Richie Cavalera (INCITE) and Igor Cavalera (LODY KONG), both providing brilliant contributions as always.
The entire album is THE Soulfly album to own for a vast variety of reasons. Whether as a benchmark for our pal Matt Young, the biblical and legendary content, the polished prowess of Soulfly or the killer (pardon the pun) cover art, you must have it.
